Located within 250 miles of the geographic, population and production centers of the U.S., Leawood businesses enjoy easy access to major interstate and U.S. highways. The growth in Leawood's business base has been phenomenal, even in these difficult economic times. In just the past year, numerous major employers have chosen to relocate their businesses to Leawood. The community's major employers currently employ over 4,000 individuals. In addition, numerous new office and residential developments are in the planning phases, promising to add over one million square feet of office/retail development and over one million square feet of multi-story condominium development in the next few years. With a population that has grown to over 31,000 in the last 25 years, and a per-capita income that ranks in the 98th percentile nationally, more and more businesses are choosing to locate in Leawood. In a five mile radius from 119th Street and Roe Avenue, the average household income is estimated at $111,000 - one of the highest in Johnson County. In addition, Leawood's residents consistently score national top-20 rankings in terms of high school graduation numbers, bachelor and post-bachelor degrees earned. According to the 2000 Census, of the 319,000 Kansas City metropolitan area residents that hold managerial or professional positions, the majority (36 percent) live in Johnson County.
