The Leawood Chamber of Commerce and the Johnson County Public Policy Council sponsor the Legislative Breakfast Series to enhance the communication and exchange of information between the business community and the Johnson County state legislative delegation.

Legislators will be on hand to discuss issues and offer the most current legislative updates. All meetings will take place at the Ritz Charles in Overland Park, 9300 West 137th Street. Casual attire is requested. Breakfast will be served promptly at 7:30 a.m.

ECJC Small Business Innovative Research Workshop

The U.S. Government provides over $2 billion annually to hundreds of small, high-tech firms through the SBIR (Small Business Innovative Research) and STTR (Small Business Tech Transfer and Research) programs. These programs are aimed at the development of early-stage, high-risk, high-payoff technologies in areas such as life sciences, information technology, manufacturing, defense, and homeland security.

More than 1000 solicitations from various federal agencies are currently open, with proposals due between now and December 2007. Mr. Suman Saripalli, an SBIR/STTR program specialist with 12+ years of SBIR experience will present information on the following topics: Program Background and Requirements Agency Selection Criteria Key Proposal Components Pre-proposal Analysis Proposal Preparation and Quality Control Proposal Evaluation/Post-submittal Analysis Commercialization Planning Forms, Cost Proposals, and Contracting Regulations This workshop is sponsored by the Missouri Small Business and Technology Development Center, and the Kansas Technology Enterprise Corporation.

Enterprise Center of Johnson County Workshop

This workshop helps entrepreneurs understand the variety of funding sources that are available for their business and where to find them.

Topics covered include common and preferred stock, rights and preferences, equity hybrids, debt and sources (e.g., SBA loans, leases, hard money lenders, banks), the SBIR program, and more. The workshop also covers the advantages and disadvantages of equity versus debt, which financing options are typically available to early stage businesses, and issues to consider in selecting a financing option.

Shawnee Mission Medical Center to Break Ground in Western Johnson County

Shawnee Mission Medical Center (SMMC) will host a Groundbreaking Ceremony for its new western Johnson County facility – the Shawnee Mission Outpatient Pavilion at Prairie Star Parkway.  Speakers at the ceremony will include Samuel H. Turner, Sr., President & CEO; Lenexa Mayor Mike Boehm; and Medical Staff President Richard Arnspiger, II, MD.

The groundbreaking will take place on Tuesday, January 9, 3 p.m., at Shawnee Mission Outpatient Pavilion at Prairie Star Parkway, 23401 Prairie Star Parkway (95th Street) in Lenexa, Kan.

Serving Western Johnson County, the first phase of this new SMMC campus will include a 79,000-square-foot outpatient center and medical office building. Services offered at the facility will consist of an emergency department, surgery center, imaging center and physician offices. Total cost of the construction project is approximately $16 million. “We are aware of the need for high-level health care services in western Johnson County and are committed to filling the current void for its residents,” said Samuel H.
