Seven Blue Valley schools were recognized with the Governor’s Achievement Award. This award recognizes top performing schools in the state of Kansas. The schools that received the accolade are: Blue River, Heartland, Lakewood, Sunset Ridge and Stilwell elementary schools and Prairie Star and Pleasant Ridge middle schools.
Since the inception of the award six years ago, Blue Valley schools have been honored with 60 Governor’s Achievement Awards. Honored schools must have achieved the Standard of Excellence in both reading and math in 2011, as well as made Adequate Yearly Progress. The schools must also be in the top five percent in the state in both reading and math.
“We are thrilled that our schools have been recognized with this award,” said Superintendent Tom Trigg. “These honors are a reflection of the dedication of our staff and hard work of our students.”

In efforts to support local families in need this winter season, Emergent Care Plus of Lee’s Summit and Leawood are offering a FREE flu shot in exchange for a canned good(s). This offer is good at both locations of Emergent Care Plus, while supplies last.
The goal is to raise 1,000 nonperishable items to donate to local food banks. There is still plenty of time to get vaccinated against the flu. The general influenza season runs yearly from October to May and peaks in February/March. The Centers for Disease Control recommends all greater than 6 months receive a flu shot for protection against influenza.
Emergent Care Plus is conveniently open 8am-8pm daily with extended weekend hours at the Lee’s Summit location 8:00am-10:00pm Fri, Sat and Sun. Both clinics offer medical care for mild to moderate illness and injury, including x-ray, lab and sutures. Walk-ins are welcome and you will always be treated by a physician.

Shawnee Mission School District Seeks Volunteers
Shawnee Mission is pleased to have been selected as one of two districts to participate in a special YouthFriends mentoring pilot program: “Learning Across Languages”.
Volunteers participating in this school-based mentoring program will spend about one hour each week, typically over lunch, working with an elementary-aged student in the English Language Learners program. The goals of the program are to give mentees an opportunity to build positive relationships with caring adult volunteers, give students additional opportunities to practice their English skills, and help the students feel more connected to their schools and communities.
There are three easy steps to apply: Fill out an application at www.youthfriends.org, consent to a background check, and attend a training session at SMSD.
Get involved and impact the life of a child today. For more information, please contact Rachel Larsen at 913.993.6411 or volunteer@smsd.org.
