Boulevard Brewing Company President, John McDonald, has been brewing business success since he founded the business in 1989.
Boulevard is the 2nd largest brewery in Missouri and has grown in double digits every year and maintained a strong reputation since it opened. John will tell you that a great business mind is not what has enabled the company to flourish. Vision, integrity, passion, determination, patience and the ability to attract outstanding people by inspiring them to have a fierce loyalty and dedication to the company is what has driven them to great success.
John embodies the character and culture of the organization he built and still walks through the brewery each morning to greet his employees and discuss the issues of the day.
Join us at this month's membership luncheon to hear John's story of entrepreneurship which led to one of the most prosperous specialty breweries in the United States.
In addition, our newest Chamber members will be presented in our quarterly "Chamber Debut". Attendees will receive a description from each business that has joined the Leawood Chamber in the past 90 days.
Chamber Members: As an added benefit, members will receive via email a spreadsheet with contact information of all the other member attendees at the event. This is another way we're working to make sure the Leawood Chamber is a great networking resource for Chamber members.

Ever think about going back to school? What would an undergraduate or graduate degree do for you? If you're like most of our students, you have a job, perhaps a family or other interests that keep you on the go.
At KU Edwards Campus, we understand your concerns about being able to balance work with family or personal life. We'll help you return to college with minimum stress.
Why Go Back?
According to recent census data, college graduates on average earn $23,000 more per year than high school graduates. The census also reveals holders of advanced degrees earn an average of 50 percent more per year than their counterparts with bachelor degrees.
Go Ahead - Go Back
What the numbers don't show is how a college degree can improve your lifestyle. It often translates to more responsibility, more frequent promotions and more job satisfaction. At home it means being able to do more for your family in every way.

MERRIAM, Kan. – Shawnee Mission Medical Center’s (SMMC) Special Addition Birth Center delivers more babies than any other hospital in the Kansas City metropolitan area and in 2010 celebrated several significant milestones. The Center broke its own birth record in 2010, bringing 3,912 newborns into the world.
In addition, the Center birthed its 100,000th baby in November. “We saw days with as many as 24 births in 24 hours,” said April Crouch, RN, Clinical Manager of Perinatal Services. “Regardless of whether we deliver one or 24 babies in a day, we focus on providing a unique birthing experience for each family.”
Because of its growing number of births each year, SMMC is making plans for a $42.5 million expansion of its birth center, which will begin later this year. The expansion will allow staff to continue delivering babies safely and comfortably, and will have the capacity to deliver 5,000 babies each year. “Our number of births has continued to grow every year and reinforces the need for our maternity expansion,” said Crouch.
In addition to delivering the most babies in the area, SMMC also provides several unique program features to ensure the safest and most enjoyable birth experience possible. OB Hospitalists are on staff to increase patient safety. A Perinatologist is available to assist in managing more complicated pregnancy cases. A Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provides ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)

Legislative Report for the Leawood Chamber of Commerce
For week ending January 14, 2011
From Bob Vancrum, Kansas Government Affairs Consultant
The 2011 Legislative Session kicked off this week with inauguration ceremonies held indoors for the first time in the state’s 150 year history due to the severe cold and blizzard conditions existing in Topeka on Monday.
The Governor’s State of the State message (www.governor.ks.gov/mediaroom/speeches ) indicated he intended to eliminate 2,000 unfilled employee positions and would reduce total state spending by $750 million dollars, which was a surprise to most observers expecting only $500 million in cuts. He also called for the elimination of 8 state agencies by mergers and reorganizations.
On Thursday, the Governor’s policy director, Landon Fulmer, briefed both House Appropriations and Senate Ways and Means Committees on the proposed 2012 budget. In addition to cutting $750 million from total state spending, the Governor recommends transferring $200 million from the Department of Transportation highway funds to the General Fund to help shore up its projected deficit. He is also calling for a “freeze” bill (what has typically been called a rescission bill) to cut $35 million in planned spending from the current year’s budget which will end June 30, 2011. Although ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)
