Boulevard Brewing Company President, John McDonald, has been brewing business success since he founded the business in 1989.

Boulevard is the 2nd largest brewery in Missouri and has grown in double digits every year and maintained a strong reputation since it opened. John will tell you that a great business mind is not what has enabled the company to flourish. Vision, integrity, passion, determination, patience and the ability to attract outstanding people by inspiring them to have a fierce loyalty and dedication to the company is what has driven them to great success.

John embodies the character and culture of the organization he built and still walks through the brewery each morning to greet his employees and discuss the issues of the day.

Join us at this month's membership luncheon to hear John's story of entrepreneurship which led to one of the most prosperous specialty breweries in the United States.

In addition, our newest Chamber members will be presented in our quarterly "Chamber Debut". Attendees will receive a description from each business that has joined the Leawood Chamber in the past 90 days.

Chamber Members: As an added benefit, members will receive via email a spreadsheet with contact information of all the other member attendees at the event. This is another way we're working to make sure the Leawood Chamber is a great networking resource for Chamber members.

News & Announcements

Somerset Ridge Winery Goes Red For Heart Health

February is better known for multi-colored, sugary conversation hearts. But before V-Day arrives, join Leawood Chamber members Cindy and Dennis Reynolds at their Kansas winery Somerset Ridge Vineyard & Winery in getting the word out about something more pressing: Women and heart disease.

On the first Friday in February, women are encouraged to wear red. We at Somerset Ridge Winery are proud to be joining the Go Red For Women movement in a special heart-healthy open-house winery weekend. From February 4 to 6 at our winery (just 40 miles south of Kansas City), 10% of all wine sales will go to the American Heart Association. While trying some of our 18 red and white wines, you can register to win a set of 4 Riedel O cabernet / merlot wine glasses. And, to go along with the heart-healthy benefits of red wine, we will be serving dark chocolate at the tasting bar — also very heart-healthy.

So come on down to the tranquility of our rural, family-run winery and have a sip of our oak barrel-aged Ruby Red or our Jefferson Cup-awarded Oktoberfest Traminette, all in the name of a happy heart.

We are open from 11am to 5pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and from noon to 5pm on Sundays. Go Red For Women is a movement of the American Heart Association, founded in 2004, with the aim of raising women's awareness of their own risk of heart disease. Free admission; wine and other local products can be purchased at the winery.

Kansas Legislative Update 01-21-2011

Legislative Report for the Leawood Chamber of Commerce
For week ending January 21, 2011

From Bob Vancrum, Kansas Government Affairs Consultant

This week was a short week for the Legislature.  Neither chamber met until Tuesday because of Dr. King’s birthday.  A combination of planned trips to Fort Riley and Fort Leavenworth for most of the legislative members on Thursday, and the heavy storm that hit on Wednesday afternoon, meant that only two full days was spent in committees.  Nevertheless, there were some important developments.

Structural Budget Issues
At a joint press conference Wednesday, the Governor, Speaker and President of the Senate advocated action as soon as possible about the state’s three long-term structural problems mentioned in his budget and in his State of the State address.  The Governor talked about Medicaid spending and said his office would lead an effort with a new blue ribbon committee to determine available and rapid cuts in Medicaid outlays.

The Senate President agreed that Chamber would tackle solutions to the problem of the Kansas Public Employees Retirement System’s (KPERS) exploding cost and seriously underfunded status.  Some believe it is the second worst underfunding of a public pension plan in the country.

The Kansas House was designated by the Governor as the chamber to address the school finance issue which t ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)
