With the Inauguration of President Barack Obama, we ask ourselves how can we bring diversity and equality to our business community. Our guest speaker at this month's luncheon is Danny Alexander, the Interim Multicultural Center Program Director in Johnson County Community College's new Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

Danny will share how JCCC is taking the steps to make the college campus more diverse. The goal of the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is to create an educational and professional experience that is diverse, integrated, and excellent in all dimensions.

Danny is also a Professor of English and a faculty sponsor of the newly formed Hispanic Student Organization at JCCC. In the early 90s, he helped found the Kansas City Missouri Union of the Homeless, the Kansas Music Alliance and the Greater Kansas City Coalition Against Censorship. For over a decade he has worked with the national Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign, which takes its name and mission from the works of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

In addition to an insightful program, our newest Chamber members will be presented in our quarterly "Chamber Debut". Each attendee will receive a business card and a description from each business that has joined the Leawood Chamber in the past 90 days.

We will be serving Chicken Marsala for lunch. Please contact the Chamber office if you have any special dietary needs.

Cost: no charge, but please RSVP

Menorah Medical Center partners with Tallgrass Creek to Save Women's Lives Through Education

Heart disease is now the leading cause of death among women in the United States. In an effort to save lives in our community, Menorah Medical Center has partnered with Tallgrass Creek and Midwest Cardiology Associates Cardiologist Elizabeth Dang, M.D., to present: Women and Heart Disease at Tallgrass Creek, 13800 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Kan., February 3, 1-2 p.m.

According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, one in three women die of heart disease, while breast cancer claims one in 30. Heart disease kills more women annually than the next seven causes of death combined. Yet, in a recent survey, only 20 percent of the women polled believed that heart disease represents a serious health risk for American women.

While these statistics are cause for concern, it’s important to remember that a large percentage of heart disease is preventable. “Every woman can take action to improve her heart health,” Dr. Dang emphasizes. “The first step is to know what ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)

FORTUNE has announced that Erickson Retirement Communities, the developer and manager of Tallgrass Creek in Overland Park, has been ranked 54th on the 12th annual “100 Best Companies to Work For” list. This is the second year in a row Erickson has made the list. The full list and related stories will appear in the February 2 issue of FORTUNE, available on newsstands today and at www.FORTUNE.com/bestcompanies.

More than 100 people currently work at the Overland Park community, which is home to 170 people and is located at 138th and Metcalf Avenue.

To pick the “100 Best Companies to Work For,” FORTUNE works with Robert Levering and Milton Moskowitz of the Great Place to Work® Institute—a global research and consulting firm with offices in 30 countries—to conduct the most extensive employee survey in corporate America. “This national recognition is a true testament to our outstanding culture,” said Rick Grindrod, chief executive officer of Erickson. “We’re committed to keeping our employees engaged and we appreciate their feedback that has earned this kind of national acknowledgment for what we do every day.”

LEAWOOD LIONS’ HUNGER INITIATIVE

Agencies are facing growing demands for services

In response to the economic crisis impacting families and children, The Leawood Lions Club has launched its Hunger Initiative to provide substantial assistance to local area food pantries. National Organizations like The Salvation Army and Catholic Charities USA along with local pantries are reporting a 77 percent increase in requests for food assistance. Many families are making this request for the first time, because of loss of job and/or are unable to make ends meet.

There are at least 86 food pantries serving the needy in Johnson and Wyandotte Counties. The Leawood Lions Club Benevolent Committee has selected 13 pantries that are facing special difficulty from greatly increased demand for their help and/or depletion of resources in addition to not having an affiliated group that they can rely on for the extra assistance.

The Leawood Lions Foundation is giving $400 to each of these pantries. With this initial one time donation, the Leawood Lions Club issues a challenge to other civic groups to provide donations to the individual pantries or add more pantries to the list that will help increase the amount of food products available to the local neighborhoods they serve.

Let us know how we can help you in this important initiative to mitigate the hunger challenge for so many in our community.

College Nannies & Tutors

College Nannies, the nation's largest nanny resource, Builds Stronger Families™ by offering a complete set of nanny placement, on-call nannies and professional babysitting services that lead to happy children and successful students.

College Nannies & Tutors began in 2000 when business student Joseph Keeley took a job as a nanny in Edina, Minnesota. As a nanny, Keeley realized that he was more than a babysitter, but rather an "Active Role Model" for the children. He recognized a need for a unique and specialized service that connected parents with safe and reliable nannies & tutors or role models. He found these role models in current college students, college graduates and certified teachers looking to make a positive difference through their jobs working with children and adolescents. The College Nannies & Tutors organization has since expanded to become the nation's largest nanny and tutor resource.

The Overland Park Placement Center serves the Kansas City, Overland Park, Leawood, Lenexa, Olathe, and surrounding communities. They are a full service agency providing Full-Time Nannies, Part-Time Nannies, Summer ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for complete profile)
