The U.S. Government provides over $2 billion annually to hundreds of small, high-tech firms through the SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) and STTR (Small Business Tech Transfer and Research) programs.
These programs are aimed at the development of early-stage, high-risk, high-payoff technologies in areas such as life sciences, information technology, manufacturing, defense, and homeland security. More than 1000 solicitations from various federal agencies are currently open, with proposals due between now and December 2009.
In this workshop learn more about these federal grant funding opportunities and how to apply for them. Presented by Ms. Denise Fields, an SBIR/STTR program specialist. Denise has over 25 years experience in senior management positions for some of the industry’s most successful start-up ventures.

Given the current economic forecast, it seems like we hear our share of bad news. For a change, wouldn't it be nice to hear a little good news, too?!?
The Chamber wants to hear your stories - When was the last time you assisted a fellow Chamber member? Did a Chamber member refer a client to you? Has knowledge you gained from a Chamber education session helped your business grow?
Please contact Angela Davidson at the Chamber office to share your "good news" - We want to celebrate your success! Angela can be reached via email at angelad@leawoodchamber.org, or call her at the Chamber office, 913-498-1514.
Look for stories in upcoming Member Memos featuring our Chamber members helping other Chamber members!

NetWork Kansas Supports One-Stop-Shop for Information Vital to Starting or Growing a Business in Kansas
The State of Kansas launched the redesign of the Kansas Business Center (www.kansas.gov/businesscenter), the official state resource for information, filings and personal assistance needed to start or maintain a Kansas business. The Kansas Business Center is a statewide initiative involving 11 state agencies and associations, including the Kansas Small Business Development Center (KSBDC) and the Kansas Center for Entrepreneurship (dba NetWork Kansas).
"We have worked hard to make Kansas the right place to start a business or to expand, and we're nationally recognized as a business-friendly state," said Governor Kathleen Sebelius. "We've cut millions of dollars in taxes and invested in workforce development and public education to help Kansas businesses. For those considering starting a business, the Kansas Business Center is a one-stop-shop for the information and resources they need."
Once businesses are up and running, the Kansas Business Center will provide them with resources to help monitor ann ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)
Menorah Medical Center partners with Tallgrass Creek to Save Women's Lives Through Education
Heart disease is now the leading cause of death among women in the United States. In an effort to save lives in our community, Menorah Medical Center has partnered with Tallgrass Creek and Midwest Cardiology Associates Cardiologist Elizabeth Dang, M.D., to present: Women and Heart Disease at Tallgrass Creek, 13800 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Kan., February 3, 1-2 p.m.
According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, one in three women die of heart disease, while breast cancer claims one in 30. Heart disease kills more women annually than the next seven causes of death combined. Yet, in a recent survey, only 20 percent of the women polled believed that heart disease represents a serious health risk for American women.
While these statistics are cause for concern, it’s important to remember that a large percentage of heart disease is preventable. “Every woman can take action to improve her heart health,” Dr. Dang emphasizes. “The first step is to know what the risk factors, diagnosis and treatment options are. “It’s also important to know the warning signs for heart disease,” she continues. “The signs and symptoms of heart disease in women can range widely and are often different from presenting symptoms in men.”
