“A record number of convenience-minded voters took advantage of these alternatives prior to the primary election day this summer,” Newby cited.  “We’ve made every effort to ensure citizens are aware of their early voting options and have made it as easy as possible in hopes we can see a repeat of those record percentage early ballots in the November General Election.”

Kansas City Guns 'N Hoses Fight Night

Three Leawood Police Officers are currently training to compete in the 2008 Kansas City Guns N Hoses boxing tournament.  This will be the fourth year for this event which benefits SAFE; Surviving Spouse and Family Endowment fund.

The Guns N Hoses boxing tournament is an event in which officers compete against firefighters in an amateur rules boxing match.  75% of the event proceeds go to SAFE which is an organization that provides immediate financial assistance to the spouse and/or family of local law enforcement officers, fire fighters, and emergency medical technicians who are killed in the line of duty.  The remaining 25% of event proceeds goes to local amateur boxing clubs which also serves as a delinquency deterrent.

Our Leawood Police Officers have been training for this event since late August and the event will be held on November 15, 2008, at 7pm in Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, KS.  This event sold out last year and will surely do the same again this year.

All fighters competing in this event need to have a sponsor.  By sponsoring a fighter, your company will receive two tickets to the event, a banner in the auditorium, a full page ad in the event program, and your company name on the boxer’s robe.

Almar Printing featured on KMBC TV9

On October 2nd, Almar Printing was featured on KMBC TV9 News. Here's the story:

Some small-business owners have good advice for weathering a tough economy. The Gromosky family has been running Almar Printing in Kansas City for 40 years.

"I worked here my whole childhood," Gromosky told KMBC's Martin Augustine. "We have seen some faltering off and some ups and downs."Gromosky said some common sense has helped the family stay in the competitive printing business for so long.

"When times are good, you've got to put some money away. When times are down, you've got to look at ways to keep your cash flow going and be able to pay the bills every month," Gromosky said. "There's no magic pill that you can take."

A lot of tips for small businesses were traded at the Kansas City Chamber of Commerce Networking Expo.

One of the strongest pieces of advice was to take care of your clients, regardless of the business.

"Staying in good with their customers, visiting them, making sure their needs are being met. Because the other guy can come in and swoop something out," said Valerie Bentley, with Grandma's Office Catering.

Gromosky said having a diverse client base has helped the business survive.

ELECTED OFFICIALS HELP TEACH LOCAL PRESCHOOLERS ABOUT VOTING

Elected Officials Help Teach Local Preschoolers About Voting ~

Students host "election" at their school, choose a presidential snack of the day!

As a historic Election Day draws near, preschoolers at the Primrose School of Leawood received a lesson October 6th from State Representatives Kay Wolf, Kevin Yoder and Pat Colloton about how democracy works and the importance of voting.

The representatives read the kindergarten and preschool students the children's book, Duck for President. The students then voted for which Primrose character should be president, choosing Billy the Duck over Percy the Rooster by just one vote. The children also cast ballots for a Presidential Snack of the Day, with the majority picking bananas and yogurt rather than pretzels and cheese.

Rep. Wolf checked student IDs the school had made for the event, and ensured they had met the school's criteria for registering to vote, which included a requirement to wear Primrose uniforms. Rep. Colloton passed out student ballots, while Kevin Jeffries, president and CEO of the Leawood Chamber of Commerce, collected them. Afterward, Rep. Yoder passed out "I Voted" stickers as each child exited the school's "voting booth." Students waved hand-made rally signs touting "Voting Rocks!", recited the Pledge of Allegiance and made either American flags or pictures of themselves as president.
