In response to concerns about the business impact of the proposed changes to the selection of district court judges in Johnson County, the Leawood Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors unanimously voted to adopt a resolution in opposition to the Question 1 proposal appearing on the November 4 ballot. The ballot proposal would change our current merit based district court judge selection process to one where judicial decisions would be exposed to the potential of being influenced by campaign contributions.
A system where judges are elected like legislators requires them to campaign and seek contributions from the same attorneys they hear cases from, creating the very real potential for bias and conflicts of interest. According to Leawood Chamber Board of Directors Chair, Tom Robinett, “Imagine your company is being sued, and your attorney leans over to you in the court room and says he is really sorry, but he supported the judge’s opponent in the last election.” Judges would also have to spend time away from hearing cases in our already over-burdened judicial system to make public appearances to campaign and attend fund-raising events.
A change to partisan elections could have a tendency to force judicial candidates to become political both in their election campaigns and in their consideration of issues and decisions required by them as a judge. There is also cost to everyone, both in the time and money involved in el ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)
"Why the Financial Rescue Package Matters to Your Business" by Tom Donohue, President and CEO, U.S. Chamber of Commerce
No one piece of legislation can fix all of the shocks roiling global financial markets, but without Congress' approval of the $700 billion financial rescue package and subsequent action taken by the Treasury, the restoration of confidence and credit in the United States would be delayed even longer. I encourage you to thank your senators and representatives who voted in favor of this important legislation.
In the public debate, the rescue package was framed as a "bailout" for Wall Street. Fortunately, for the sake of our financial future, the members of Congress who voted for the bill saw it for what it really is—a lifeline to capital-starved small businesses and consumers on Main Street and a necessary stimulant for our struggling economy.
The rescue package, once it is implemented, will get credit flowing again so that Main Street businesses can continue or expand production, hire more workers, and purchase more inventory.
Families and consumers should also benefit from the rescue package. The credit crunch has made loans for everything from cars and houses to furnishings and college tuition much harder to come by. Without such investment and consumption, jobs are lost, our standard of living declines, and our economic future is imperiled. This package will help spur consumption, ... Western Johnson County’s only advanced health care facility – the Shawnee Mission Outpatient Pavilion at Prairie Star Parkway – is now open for patient care.
Located at 23401 Prairie Star Parkway in western Lenexa, the 79,000-square-foot outpatient facility features a 24/7 Emergency Department, Surgery Center, Imaging Center, Laboratory, Shawnee Mission Primary Care location and offices for physician specialists.
“We are aware of the need for high-level health care services in western Johnson County and are pleased to fill the current void for the residents of western Lenexa and surrounding communities,” said Samuel H. Turner, Sr., SMMC President and CEO. “I am pleased that the area’s growing population will now be able to access Shawnee Mission Medical Center’s health care experts, but in a more convenient location close to home.”
Ground was broken on the $16 million facility in January 2007 and the building opened for patients at noon today. Plans call for a full-service inpatient hospital to be built on the site as community need necessitates, most likely in three to five years.

Martin Luther King Legacy and Scholarship Awards
Preparations are being made for the 5th Annual Martin Luther King Legacy and Scholarship Awards Dinner. As has been their custom, the past Legacy Award Winners will be meeting to give nominations for this year's awards in the following categories:
Legacy Award
Diversity Advocate in Law
Diversity Advocate in Journalism and Media
Diversity Advocate in Community Involvement
Diversity Advocate in Sports
The award criteria is someone, who through their life, has exemplified the teaching of Martin Luther King, that all people are equal and should be judged by their character, not their race, religion, sex, or national origin.
If you wish to nominate someone, email Larry Meeker, last year's Legacy Award winner and chairman of this year's committee, at larrygmeeker@hotmail.com.
This year's student essay topic is:
Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. said that one day he hoped his children would be judged by their character, not the color of their skin. Taking this statement a step further, and looking at the political arena today, where we had an African-American and a senior citizen running for President, and a woman and white male running for Vice-President, do you think people are finally being judged for their character rather than their race, age, or gender? Please ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)
