Topics include:

Key Note: Volunteer leadership in the community
Julie Quirin, Saint Luke's South CEO
Engaging volunteer leaders to meet critical needs is vital for any community. In this session you will learn how volunteering in civic and nonprofit organizations not only provides a feeling of self-fulfillment and a mechanism to "give back" but also provides opportunities for leadership development and individual learning. Participants will be challenged to think critically about their own leadership journey and how volunteer leadership may help them achieve their own career goals.

Session Two, Group A: Leading multiple generations at work
Dr. Bob Clark, Vice Chancellor, KU Edwards Campus
How can you expect to lead multiple generations successfully when the values, experiences, styles of communication, motivations and general world outlook vary dramatically? This presentation will explore the unique natures of each generation and describe leadership approaches that can minimize limitations and maximize the benefits of bridging the gaps among those called Traditionals, Baby Boomers, Gen X'ers and Millenials.

Session Two, Group B: Synergies between leadership and entrepreneurship
Wallace Meyer, Director of Entrepreneurship Programs, KU School of Business
Entrepreneurship drives the economy (entrepreneurial small firms employ over half of all private sector employees); entrepreneurship drives creativity and innovation (entrepreneurial firms produce 14 times more patents per employee than large companies); and entrepreneurship drives wealth (the vast majority of the wealthiest US citizens are entrepreneurs or inherited their wealth from entrepreneurial ancestors). Entrepreneurial leadership is a major contributor to this dominating performance. In this seminar you will learn and practice the entrepreneurial leadership skills which will enable you to accelerate your capabilities and lead your organization (business, family, or golf foursome) to greater performance.

Don’t Bet Against America

Don’t Bet Against America

The following is a column by Lieutenant Governor Mark Parkinson:

This year has been one of the worst financial years in American history.   Workers have lost their jobs, the banking system has failed, our retirement accounts are melting away, and panic has set in.

One advantage of age is those of us over 50 or more have seen all of this before.  And, while I don’t know exactly when it will happen, I am certain of this.  America will come back.  Our economy will get moving.  The markets will rise.

My first memory of a recession was 1974.  I was 17 and living in Wichita.  The pain was deep and long.  The stock market went from a high of 1050 to a low of 575.  Unemployment shot up and some thought we’d never come out of it.  Well, we did.  The market is now 14 times what it was in ‘74.

Then we had the market crash of ‘87.  The market lost 25% of its value in one day.  I remember heading down to a brokerage office to watch the reaction of the financial community as the market crashed.  More than one broker told me it was 1929 all over again and we would never come back.  Well the market made up all its losses the next year and has gone up 500% since the low in ‘87.

Then we had the tech crash, starting in early 2000 and that accelerated after ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)

As with the original Pinnacle Award the new honorees were selected as they demonstrate excellence in their professional field or philanthropic pursuits:

Arts: David Hughes, Jr., Kansas City, MO, founder of the Charlotte Street Foundation.  Hughes has been a catalyst for Kansas City's emergence as one of the most dynamic cities in America for contemporary art. In launching the Urban Culture Project, he also has helped to revitalize downtown Kansas City by transforming empty storefronts into galleries for the display of contemporary art installations and performances.

Entrepreneurship: John Burgess, Leawood, KS, founder and CEO of Interactive Media Holdings, LLC which was formed to develop and license online media social networks dedicated for use by schools and other organizati ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)
