Featuring keynote speaker Dave Kiersznowski, CEO of DEMDACO, Inc. DEMDACO (www.demdaco.com) has quietly become one of the area's fastest growing, entrepreneurial companies, and is ranked as one of the leaders in high quality home accessories.
Now headquartered in Leawood, DEMDACO was founded in 1997. DEMDACO's mission is "to create beautiful gifts and décor that lift the spirit and enhance the home". Perhaps their best-known product line is the "Willow Tree" hand-cared sculptures.
DEMDACO was recognized in 2005 as one of Kansas City's "Best places to Work". Kiersznowski states "The company aims to foster an environment where employees know the concepts of success and integrity aren't mutually exclusive." DEMDACO has been very successful in recruiting and retaining talented artists that help the company grow and expand their product line. DEMDACO provides an employee-friendly environment that supports creativity. Annette Glary, HR director, was recently quoted stating "He (Dave) recognizes that people have lives outside of work. He doesn't just say it. He lives it and delivers it."

Recently, the media has begun to turn it's attention to the harmful effects of a once applauded trait of busy professionals: multitasking. Prior to recent studies in this area, it was commonly thought that the human brain (especially women's brains) were not only capable, but adept at performing more then one task at a time. A person who could "effectively" multitask was heralded as a model employee or business owner; someone who could do massive amounts of work in a short amount of time while thus freeing up time to do even more work.
Current trends in studies of cognition have begun to pull apart this fallacy. Our brains are not truly designed to do more then one task simultaneously. Even though we think we are doing two things at once (talking on the phone while checking email) we are actually switching our attention back and forth between the task. For two seconds we are listening to someone talk, for two seconds we are reading a sentence. However, we don't allow our brains the time to process any of the information we are receiving. The next time you try a task such as this, see how many times you h ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)
You are managing your time pretty well—things are tight and there are activities you would like to add to your schedule, like a Yoga class or a new hobby, but you just can’t juggle one more thing.
But, then something happens that is about to add a huge responsibility to your already overloaded schedule - there is a crisis with your elderly parent or relative. The crisis might involve your mom or dad falling and breaking a hip, rear-ending another driver, getting pneumonia, or wandering away and, this time, he or she can’t find their way back home.
How do you find the time to add one more thing to a schedule that is already full? How do you take time away from your job or taking care of your own children? You are determined to take care of your parent the same way that they took care of you, but how? Feeling overwhelmed - or giving into a meltdown - is not the only alternative.
Don’t get frustrated; get help to deal with this new complex situation. With more than 80 percent of elder care (an average 71 hours a week) provided by family members, an emerging field of geriatric experts known as professional care managers have s ...
