Topics include:
Key Note: Volunteer leadership in the community
Julie Quirin, Saint Luke's South CEO
Engaging volunteer leaders to meet critical needs is vital for any community. In this session you will learn how volunteering in civic and nonprofit organizations not only provides a feeling of self-fulfillment and a mechanism to "give back" but also provides opportunities for leadership development and individual learning. Participants will be challenged to think critically about their own leadership journey and how volunteer leadership may help them achieve their own career goals.
Session Two, Group A: Leading multiple generations at work
Dr. Bob Clark, Vice Chancellor, KU Edwards Campus
How can you expect to lead multiple generations successfully when the values, experiences, styles of communication, motivations and general world outlook vary dramatically? This presentation will explore the unique natures of each generation and describe leadership approaches that can minimize limitations and maximize the benefits of bridging the gaps among those called Traditionals, Baby Boomers, Gen X'ers and Millenials.
Session Two, Group B: Synergies between leadership and entrepreneurship
Wallace Meyer, Director of Entrepreneurship Programs, KU School of Business
Entrepreneurship drives the economy (entrepreneurial small firms employ over half of all private sector employees); entrepreneurship drives creativity and innovation (entrepreneurial firms produce 14 times more patents per employee than large companies); and entrepreneurship drives wealth (the vast majority of the wealthiest US citizens are entrepreneurs or inherited their wealth from entrepreneurial ancestors). Entrepreneurial leadership is a major contributor to this dominating performance. In this seminar you will learn and practice the entrepreneurial leadership skills which will enable you to accelerate your capabilities and lead your organization (business, family, or golf foursome) to greater performance.

Term sheets are an important tool for companies seeking angel funds or venture capital funds. Yet they are often written in arcane or obscure language. What’s “Anti-Dilution” and what effect does it have? In point of fact, the difference between “full ratchet” and weighted average Anti-Dilution can mean millions of dollars to the founders. That’s real money. In the seminar, you will learn how to navigate term sheet provisions, with a focus on how key deal terms protect and impact the entrepreneur. Topics covered will include key deal points, how to negotiate to the satisfaction of both parties, and what terms and conditions are commonly used by angel investors in funding early stage ventures. Please join us for a lively discussion of Term Sheets.

In response to concerns about the business impact of the proposed changes to the selection of district court judges in Johnson County, the Leawood Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors unanimously voted to adopt a resolution in opposition to the Question 1 proposal appearing on the November 4 ballot. The ballot proposal would change our current merit based district court judge selection process to one where judicial decisions would be exposed to the potential of being influenced by campaign contributions.
A system where judges are elected like legislators requires them to campaign and seek contributions from the same attorneys they hear cases from, creating the very real potential for bias and conflicts of interest. According to Leawood Chamber Board of Directors Chair, Tom Robinett, “Imagine your company is being sued, and your attorney leans over to you in the court room and says he is really sorry, but he supported the judge’s opponent in the last election.” Judges would also have to spend time away from hearing cases in our already over-burdened judicial system to make public appearances to campaign and attend fund-raising events.
A change to partisan elections could have a tendency to force judicial candidates to become political both in their election campaigns and in their consideration of issues and decisions required by them as a judge. There is also cost to everyone, both in the time and money involved in el ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)
The Johnson County Education Research Triangle is a partnership between Johnson County, the University of Kansas and Kansas State University to create economic stimulus and a higher quality of life with new facilities that provide cancer research, food safety research, animal health, engineering, business, science and technology degrees in Johnson County.
Proceeds from the 1/8 cent countywide sales tax, estimated to be about $15 million per year, would be divided equally to support a KU Cancer Clinical Research Center in northeast Johnson County; a Business, Engineering, Science and Technology Center at the KU Edwards Campus in Overland Park; and a KSU National Food and Animal Health Institute biotechnology campus in Olathe. It is estimated that the tax will create new jobs and attract new companies to the area; help sustain existing engineering, technology, and animal health companies as well as the companies that support them; and promote the region as a research and development hub, attracting additional R & D funding – in all, an anticipated $1.4 billion in economic impact over the next two decades.
"The Chamber Board of Directors feels this is a unique and important opportunity for Johnson County to invest money that stays right here in our County for the benefit of our residents and our businesses. Johnson County residents recognize the value of quality education, and have consistently voted for educational excellence in this C ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)

Volunteer Celebrates 45 Years of Service and Upcoming 88th Birthday
Mother of two and grandmother-of-five Marian Shultz has seen many changes at Menorah Medical Center (MMC) since she started working as a volunteer 45 years ago. She also has her 88th birthday to celebrate soon. Menorah team members celebrated the two special occasions on Wednesday, Oct. 29, at MMC.
Steven D. Wilkinson, Menorah President and CEO said, “It is a fantastic achievement for Marian to have completed 45 years of service with the hospital this year. Words cannot describe how thankful we are to have her. We thank her for all of her dedication, commitment and hard work over the years.”
There aren’t many jobs Schultz hasn’t tried her hand at during her 45 years as a volunteer. She first joined Menorah at the Rockhill Road location in Kansas City, MO and was the President elect of the Menorah Auxiliary Board. As president, she took an active role in moving the hospital from the Rockhill location to the current location at 119th Street; attending every planning meeting related to the move and the opening. Both Schultz’ father and brother were part of the Menorah Board of Directors. She’s done it all, ranging from helping transport patients to various departments, to adding smiles on the children’s faces in pediatrics, to most recently serving as an integral part of the surgery waiting room team ... Tallgrass Creek, a full-service retirement community in Overland Park, Kansas, is joining a growing number of U.S. workplaces where employees can access free or low-cost health care at a clinic right where they work.
Erickson Retirement Communities, the Baltimore-based developer/manager of Tallgrass Creek and 23 similar communities across the country, is part of a new wave of employers starting to offer on-site employee health clinics as a way to give employees access to convenient, affordable, quality health care while at same time curbing skyrocketing health costs.
Approximately 100 people currently work for Erickson in the Kansas City area, and that number is expected to grow to about 400 within the next 4-6 years. Erickson communities currently employ more than 12,000 people nationally, and that figure is also steadily rising.
According to a 2006-07 survey by the human resource consulting firm Watson Wyatt Worldwide, an estimated 23 percent of large employers (those with at least 1,000 employees) have on-site health clinics. Another 6 percent of these large employers were to add clinics this year. Toyota, Perdue Farms, and Pepsi Bottling Group are among the companies that have recently opened on-site health clinics for their staff.
According to Craig Thorne, M.D., vice president and medical director responsible for employee health and wellness initiatives for Erickson, the company offers both acute and preventative care, including treatment ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)
