Johnson County OKs $18.1 Million for Stormwater Projects

The 2012 Stormwater Management Program approved Thursday, September 29, by the Johnson County Board of Commissioners totals more than $18.1 million, including funding for capital projects in six cities.

The Board approved the plan unanimously.

Kent Lage, manager of the Urban Services Division of the Johnson County Department of Public Works and Infrastructure, said the 2012 Stormwater Management Program has budgeted $14.1 million next year for 12 design/construction projects in Olathe, Shawnee, Merriam, Overland Park, Gardner, and Leawood. The department is located at 1800 West 56 Highway, Olathe.

The plan also sets aside approximately $3.2 million for supplementary projects/efforts to support the Stormwater Management Program and funding for other countywide stormwater initiatives. According to Lage, the projects will enable cities to continue flood mitigation and initiate several proactive efforts.

“These efforts will continue to migrate the program focus from the traditional reactive focus only, to include a leading-edge proactive focus that is necessary for the program, the cities and the county to have a positive impact on efforts to stop the creation of future flooding problems, protect the public, minimize the impacts to the environment, and comply with unfunded federal mandates,” he advised the Board in a briefing sheet.

In the 2012 plan, four capital projects are located in the city of Olathe, incl ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)

Johnson County CARS Provides $15.7 Million in 2012

Road improvements totaling $15.7 million for 2012 involving 20 new projects in nine cities, were unanimously approved Thursday, September 29, by the Johnson County Board of Commissioners.

The funding included $12,739,462 for the County Assistance Road System (CARS) program that was approved in August by the Board as part of the county’s FY 2012 Budget plus the use of $2,983,538 from 2010 and 2011 CARS projects for a total authorization of $15,723,000.

Kent Lage, manager of the department’s Urban Services Division, said the $2.9 million was being “returned” by Overland Park and Olathe for three projects in which economic conditions, lower construction bids, or the receipt of additional federal funds have decreased the CARS funding requirements. The department is located at 1800 West 56 Highway, Olathe.

Most of the projects on the CARS to-do list in 2012 will involve major maintenance of existing roadways, such as asphalt overlays, curb repairs, storm sewers, sidewalk improvements that include ADA compliant ramps, pavement markings, and traffic loops.

Two projects, both in Overland Park, will span two years, beginning in 2012 and ending in 2013, to improve traffic capacity on 159th Street from Quivira to Antioch roads and on Quivira Road from College Boulevard to 119th Street.

The 159th Street project will receive $6,450,000 in 2012 CARS funding to widen the existing two-lane thoroughfare to four ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)
