Our guest speaker at this month's membership luncheon is Ron Rowe, Director of Small Group Sales for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas City (Blue KC). For more than 12 years Ron has been responsible for various advertising, sales, and product development initiatives at Blue KC. He currently serves on the Blue KC Healthcare Reform Task Force Oversight Committee and Co-Chairs the company’s Health Care Reform Product and Pricing sub-committee. Ron has worked in the healthcare industry in both the insurance and provider segments for more than 25 years.

Shawnee Mission Express Care will host a free cholesterol screening event on Saturday, November 6, 9 a.m. - noon. Express Care is located inside the Hy-Vee at 6655 Martway in Mission, next to the pharmacy.  

High cholesterol is one of the most controllable risk factors for coronary artery disease, heart attack and stroke. Too much LDL (bad) cholesterol in your blood can build up in the inner walls of your arteries that feed the heart and brain. As a result, clots can form, increasing your risk for a heart attack or stroke. One in every six adults has high cholesterol.

A number of factors can be attributed to your cholesterol level such as age, gender, family history and diet. “Abnormal cholesterol numbers are a risk factor that can lead to cardiovascular disease, the number one cause of death in the United States,” said Heather Jorns, Heart & Vascular Community Coordinator. “The good news is there are things you can do to improve your cholesterol numbers. Kansas earthwork artist Stan Herd to speak at JCCC

Kansan Stan Herd, considered the world’s preeminent representational earthwork artist, will deliver his address, The Prairie Renaissance, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, in the Hudson Auditorium of the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art at Johnson County Community College. A reception precedes the event at 6 p.m. The lecture and reception, presented by JCCC’s Kansas Studies Institute, are free and open to the public.

Herd will be looking at themes of prairie art and how painters, sculptors and now filmmakers are rethinking the concept of the prairie in their subject matter.

In addition, the college is working toward a permanent crop art piece created by Herd, installed on the west side of campus near the Horticultural Science Center. Leiker says the finished piece would be a collaboration between KSI, the Nerman Museum, campus services, and horticulture and art history programs. Students in horticulture would help implement and maintain the piece.

“We are in the beginning discussions of a Stan Herd original to be created over the next two years, contingent on funding,” Leiker said.

Internist Joins St. Joseph Medical Center

Ahmed M. Madi, MD, recently joined the medical staff of St. Joseph Medical Center. Dr. Madi specializes in internal medicine. He earned his medical degree at Garyounis University in Benghazi, Libya. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Griffin Hospital in Derby, Conn., and his fellowship in nephrology at The University of Toronto.
