JCCC Hosts Technology Competition for High School Students

Johnson County Community College will hold the second annual Competitive Technology Event for 9th-12th grade students from 8 a.m.-6 p.m.Thursday, Jan. 12, starting in the JCCC Fieldhouse.  The awards presentation will start at 5:30 p.m. in Polsky Theater, Carlsen Center.

Approximately 366 students from 19 high schools in Johnson, Douglas and Miami counties will be in attendance – four more schools than participated in last year’s inaugural event.

These students will compete independently or with classmates in 32 events in areas such as architecture, engineering, information technology, dragster design, Computer-aided Design (CAD), problem solving, fashion, film, flight, music, robotics, transportation and video production. Awards will be given for the top three places in each event and for the top overall school.

“This event gives area students a chance to attend a free event and compete in real career-related events. It’s a great experience,” said Damon Feuerborn, associate professor, drafting, and an organizer of the event.

The Competitive Technology Event is based on the state of Kansas career clusters and will help prepare students for future possible careers in these areas.  The event is free for the registered student competitors and open to the public for viewing.

Leawood Chamber Annual Meeting and Hall of Fame Awards Luncheon a Sellout Success

The Leawood Chamber of Commerce held its 12th Annual Meeting on Wednesday, December 14th at the Sheraton Overland Park Hotel. The event was a sellout success with nearly 350 people in attendance, making 2011 a record year. The Hall of Fame Award recipients were announced, and Barnett Helzberg, Jr., formerly of Helzberg Diamonds, was the keynote speaker who delivered an inspiring and entertaining story.

Ben Florance, with the City of Leawood Fire Department, and Joe Langer, formerly with the City of Leawood Police Department, were recognized as the winners of the individual category for the Hall of Fame Awards. Park Place took home the award in the business category.

MENORAH MEDICAL CENTER ACQUIRES ULTRA LOW-DOSE CT SCAN TECHNOLOGY

The future is here for physicians and patients at Menorah Medical Center when it comes to accurately diagnosing and detecting life-threatening illnesses with lower radiation. The hospital, part of HCA Midwest Health System, Kansas City’s largest healthcare network, has added the newest generation of computed tomography (CT) to its imaging arsenal, which means that in a single rotation, physicians can see internal structures in the human body as small as a grain of sand.

Menorah Medical Center is the only hospital in Kansas City to offer this revolutionary low-dose CT scan technology. Physicians can gather high-definition clarity on tumors, intermediate risk heart disease, GI ailments such as appendicitis and other conditions to deliver a high-definition, accurate diagnosis and allow patients to receive 50 percent lower dose levels of radiation.
