Idiots' Open Golf Tournament Slated

Golfers who long to hit the greens, no matter what the weather brings, will welcome the chance to tee off at the sixth annual Idiots' Open benefiting Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care.

The tournament is Saturday, February 7, 2009, at Smiley's Golf Complex, 10195 Monticello Ter., at K-7 and K-10 highways in Lenexa, Kan. The event runs 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Come rain, sleet or snow, tournament participants persevere - it's all in the hospice spirit of making the most of every day.

Proceeds from this event will help seriously ill patients and their families. Care includes managing patients' pain and symptoms, as well as providing emotional and spiritual support for patients and their families. Funds raised cover costs incurred by patients who are unable to pay and services not customarily reimbursable by insurance.

Registration fees include nine holes of golf with the option to finish the other nine holes after the tournament, brightly colored golf balls, a hot lunch and coffee. The event also includes silent and live auctions.

To register or for more information about the tournament and additional sponsorship opportunities, contact Vicki Rancilio at Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care, 816-363-2600, or visit http://www.kansascityhospice.org.

Lumbar Spinal Stenosis??

Lumbar Spinal Stenosis?

- Are you living with dull or aching back pain, numbness or "pins and needles" in your legs, calves or buttocks?
- Are your symptoms aggravated when standing or walking?
- Do you experience relief bending forward or while sitting?

If you answered yes to any of the questions, you may suffer from Lumbar Spinal Stenosis (LLS).

For nearly two years, Darlene Gutshall of Lee’s Summit had difficulty getting out of bed. A trip up the stairs was precarious because it felt as though her right leg might give way. She limped, and the pain was ever-present, even when reduced by daily medication. Long-distance walks were out of the question. And the symptoms were getting worse.

Gutshall wasn’t alone. She suffered from lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS), a common spinal problem in people older than 50 that results from a narrowing of the spinal canal, ultimately pinching nerves and creating pain. A rash of new LSS sufferers is expected as baby boomers age.

Fortunately for Gutshall, her orthopedic group referred her to Dr. Harold Hess, a neurosurgeon with fellowship training in spinal surgery, who recommended a new procedure called X-STOP ® Interspinous Process Decompression (IPD®).  Dr. Hess is one of fewer than 10 surgeons in Kansas City who have performed X-STOP surgeries. He is also only one of two in Johnson County.
