Join us for lunch and conversation with Leawood's State Senators Terrie Huntington and John Vratil and Representative Pat Colloton before they head up to Topeka for the 2011 legislative session.

The Chamber will present Leawood's delegation with our 2011 Legislative Priorities, and then each elected official will give a short presentation on what they feel will be the hot issues in Topeka this session.

The Leawood Chamber of Commerce and the Johnson County Public Policy Council will sponsor the Legislative Breakfast Series to enhance the communication and exchange of information between the business community and the Johnson County state legislative delegation. Legislators will be on hand to discuss issues and offer the most current legislative updates.

Speaker Schedule to be announced, and is subject to change.

All meetings will be held at the Ritz Charles Overland Park, 9000 West 137th Street, and casual attire is requested. Breakfast will be served promptly at 7:30 a.m.

Ring in the New Year at NoRTH

NoRTH has created a special three-course dinner that is perfect for you and your loved ones to enjoy as you ring in the New Year. The first course is your choice of Italian Winter Soup, Slow Braised Short Ribs, Trio of Crab, Organic Greens with beets and goat cheese, or Artichoke and Fondue. Course two includes a choice of Lentil Ragout, Filet Mignon, Pan Roasted Scallops, Grilled Rack of Lamb or Noana “Two Ways” Chicken. Lastly, the third course is a choice of Butterscotch Pudding, Chocolate Nutella Cake or Vanilla Mascarpone Cheesecake.

The U.S. Government provides over $2 billion annually to hundreds of small, high-tech firms through the SBIR (Small Business Innovative Research) and STTR (Small Business Tech Transfer and Research) programs. These programs are aimed at the development of early-stage, high-risk, high-payoff technologies in areas such as life sciences, information technology, manufacturing, defense, and homeland security. More than 1000 solicitations from various federal agencies are currently open.

In this workshop learn more about these federal grant funding opportunities and how to apply for them. Presented by Don Colbert. Dr Colbert has over 30 years of experience involving research, education, business and management in a variety of industries. He currently is affiliated with KTEC, KBA, and Heartland BioVentures focusing on enhancing all areas of federal funding to support technology-based economic development and innovation commercialization in Kansas.

MENORAH MEDICAL CENTER RECEIVES SILVER SYRINGE CHALLENGE AWARD

It’s that time of year when the flu rises to the top of healthcare concerns.  Two local hospitals, Menorah Medical Center and Lee’s Summit Medical Center, part of HCA Midwest Health System, and their employees are taking impressive proactive roles in reducing the risk of the flu spreading amongst patients and staff by getting immunized.  The hospitals are the recipients of the Silver Syringe Challenge Award from the Mid America Immunization Coalition (MAIC) for their leadership in promoting immunizations amongst their healthcare workers.  The honors were presented at MAIC’s annual awards meeting in early December.
 
All employees of HCA Midwest Health System, along with HCA employees in 163 HCA facilities and 105 freestanding surgery centers in 20 states, were required to get a flu shot and take other approved precautions to help prevent the spread of flu last season. Nearly 100 percent of HCA Midwest Health System and HCA employees were vaccinated.  Employee actions not only help make a safer environment for patients and colleagues alike, they also lowered their own chances of acquiring the flu, meaning they are less likely to take it home to their families.
 
In response to this aggressive company-wide flu immunization policy for the 2009/2010-flu season, Lee’s Summit Medical Center increased its overall flu vaccinations among healthcare workers by 177 percent.  Menorah Medical Center boasts a ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)
