The Leawood Chamber of Commerce and the Johnson County Public Policy Council will sponsor the Legislative Breakfast Series to enhance the communication and exchange of information between the business community and the Johnson County state legislative delegation. Legislators will be on hand to discuss issues and offer the most current legislative updates.

Kansas Legislative Update 02-04-2011

This was the week of the abominable snowman, as nearly a foot of snow was dumped on Topeka.  The Legislature was closed down completely on Tuesday and Wednesday.   This has never happened for two days in a row. In fact, it is not uncommon for the Legislature to continue operating even when the Governor (for emergency reasons) has closed down the rest of state government.  Notwithstanding this interruption, there were interesting developments.

On Monday, House Taxation Committee held hearings on HB2091 which would repeal last year’s one cent sales tax increase.  The Kansas Chamber urged the committee not to eliminate the increase but expressed the desire to use the sales tax to help eliminate the corporate income tax.  Bernie Koch of the KEPC and several local chambers, as well as a representative of KNEA testified against the bill and in support of keeping the one cent sales tax in effect.  The only proponent of repealing the tax to testify was Rep. Charlotte O’Hara of Stilwell.  She testified that the sales tax is driving businesses and sales out of Johnson County and into Missouri.

Shawnee Mission Urgent Care to Host Heart Health Event

MERRIAM, Kan. – Shawnee Mission Urgent Care will host a heart screening event in honor of American Heart Month, Saturday, February 26, 8-11 a.m., at Urgent Care’s new location, 9040 Quivira Road, in Lenexa.

For just $10, participants will receive an EKG reviewed by the cardiologists of Shawnee Mission Cardiology Associates, a cholesterol and blood pressure screening, and preventive heart and stroke education. Fasting is encouraged for optimal results and a light breakfast will be served following the screenings. Space is limited. Registration is $10, which will be a direct donation to the American Heart Association.
