Mr. Herb Parmet of Parmet & Associates, LLC will be our speaker for this event.

Parmet has eighteen years of training experience working with a diversified number of regional and national companies. His expertise spans a number of areas, including sales training and leadership development. One of his most requested workshops is what he will be addressing at this luncheon: “Understanding and Fulfilling our Customer’s Needs.”

Every business knows how crucial it is to “engage” the customer. After all, it is the engine that drives business. All administration and strategy needs to be focused on the centrality of our customer. How do we see our customer, and how do we respond to them? Do we fully engage them with quality focus and concern on a daily basis?

By not only understanding this, but truly embracing it, will we develop trust and the consequent comfort of our customer. This will result in customer loyalty and commitment, and directly impact our bottom line success. Mr. Parmet will present some thought provoking ideas relating to this important subject.

In addition, our newest Chamber members will be presented in our quarterly "Chamber Debut." Attendees will receive a description from each business that has joined the Leawood Chamber in the past 90 days.

Chamber Members: As an added benefit, members will receive via email a spreadsheet with contact information of all the other member attendees at the event. This is another way we're working to make sure the Leawood Chamber is a great networking resource for Chamber members.

Deborah Wilkerson Named as Incoming CEO of the Greater Kansas City Foundation

The Board of Directors of the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation today announced that Deborah Wilkerson, currently serving as the Community Foundation's General Counsel and Chief Operating Officer, will succeed Laura McKnight as the CEO of the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation effective March 31, 2012. Bill Berkley, Chair of the Community Foundation Board of Directors said, "The Board is extraordinarily grateful for Laura's 11 years of service to the Foundation. While selfishly we are sad that her six-year tenure as CEO is coming to an end, Laura has made an incredible impact not only on our region, but also on the field of philanthropy. In fact, 2011 was a record year for the Community Foundation. Our Board knows Debbie Wilkerson is a proven leader who not only will carry on the important work of this Foundation, but also will be a tireless advocate for increasing philanthropy in our region."

Wilkerson, a Kansas City native, joined the Community Foundation in 1998 after practicing tax and estate planning law at the firm of Shook, Hardy & Bacon. At the Community Foundation, Wilkerson has been responsible for the oversight of the organization and of the many complex charitable gifts that the foundation receives. In addition, Wilkerson has led the Community Foundation's efforts to support large philanthropic projects benefiting the greater Kansas City region. She is married to Kevin Wilkerson, and is the mother of four children, ranging in ag ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)

SAFEHOME EXCEEDS $50,000 CHALLENGE GIFT GOAL!

In December 2011, SAFEHOME, Johnson County’s only comprehensive provider of domestic violence services received a challenge gift to ultimately raise $150,000 for the agency. An anonymous donor made an initial gift of $50,000 and challenged SAFEHOME and its supporters to raise an additional $50,000. Since the challenge has been met, the donor will help raise a third $50,000 gift to create a total investment of more than $150,000 for SAFEHOME services to domestic violence victims in our community.

“We are thrilled to announce that we have met and exceeded the challenge gift goal. With the support of more than 120 individual donors, we have raised over $75,000! This, plus the donor match of an additional $50,000 is a wonderful start towards our 2012 budget goal of slightly over $3,000,000. In a tough economy, the community continues to understand and support the vision of safe and healthy families,” said Sharon Katz, SAFEHOME Executive Director.

$150,000 will provide:

An Inspirational Valentine

Celebrate the Women in YOUR Life

A Note From a Friend:

Tasha Berls was diagnosed with advanced stage lung cancer exactly one year ago. Tasha is a mother to a bright and beautiful four year old girl, wife, daughter, sister and an award winning first grade teacher. Tasha is in her early 30's and prior to this, was a healthy nonsmoker.

Tasha is also my best friend, and has been for the past 17 years. She is my first child's godmother, was a bridesmaid in my wedding, was there when I lost my mother to this same, horrible disease and was there to celebrate the birth of my children. But more than anything, Tasha taught me what it means to be a friend. She made me a better person and through this past year, taught me what true strength really is.

Right now, Tasha is very sick. She has been in and out of the hospital since the end of December, made a trip to MD Anderson, and is now back in the hospital in Kansas City.

She needs our help.... Please join Melanie, Kristin and me for a Celebration of the Women in Your Life -- including Tasha. Remind them how incredible they are each and every day. Hope to see you on February 9! With gratitude, MB

Forbes Names First National of Nebraska One of ‘America’s Best Banks’

First National of Nebraska, the largest privately owned banking company in the United States, has been named to Forbes’ “America’s Best Banks” list for 2012.  First National is 17th on the magazine’s list, which ranked the country’s 100 largest publicly traded banks and thrifts based on asset quality, capital adequacy and profitability.

First National Bank, a division of First National of Nebraska, has six locations in Overland Park, Olathe, Shawnee and Fairway, Kansas.

“We are honored to be named among ‘America’s Best Banks’ by such a highly-regarded publication as Forbes,” said Daniel K. O’Neill, president, First National of Nebraska.  “This achievement is a testament to our efforts to significantly build our capital reserves while enhancing the quality of our loan portfolio during one of the most challenging times ever for the banking industry.”

Forbes’ data is based on the regulatory filings of public banks and thrifts as of Dec. 1, 2011.  Data supplied by SNL Financial was used by the magazine to rank the financial institutions according to eight metrics of financial health, including return on average equity; net interest margin; nonperforming loans (NPLs) as a percentage of loans; nonperforming assets as percentage of assets; reserves as a percentage of NPLs; Tier 1 capital ratio; risk-based capital ratio; and leverage ratio.

Kansas Legislative Update 01-27-2012

Legislative Report for the Leawood Chamber of Commerce
For week ending January 27, 2012
From Bob Vancrum, Consultant

This week has seen the roll out of the Governor’s school finance reform package and further discussions about his tax reform package in both the House and Senate committees.  There were also further hearings on his Medicaid reform plan.  In addition, a special joint House and Senate Commerce Committee scheduled and started holding several days of hearings concerning the forensic audit report on the Kansas Bioscience Authority, requested last year by the Legislature and Governor.  The Governor has frozen $22 million that previously would have been paid over to the Bioscience Authority amid all the controversy. There have been calls by certain House members (including Anthony Brown, the chairman of House Commerce Committee) to have both more extensive oversight by the Legislature of the Bioscience Authority and even suggesting the independent authority should be rolled into the Department of Commerce.  The independent Board of Directors is a key feature of this economic development agency, which was established as a part of the 2006 Kansas Economic Growth Act.

The Governor’s tax proposal was introduced Friday in bill form as HB 2560 and SB 339.  The criticism has been intense about removing such personal deductions as mortgage interest and charitable contributions, and credits ra ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)
