Boulevard Brewing Company President, John McDonald, has been brewing business success since he founded the business in 1989.

Boulevard is the 2nd largest brewery in Missouri and has grown in double digits every year and maintained a strong reputation since it opened. John will tell you that a great business mind is not what has enabled the company to flourish. Vision, integrity, passion, determination, patience and the ability to attract outstanding people by inspiring them to have a fierce loyalty and dedication to the company is what has driven them to great success.

John embodies the character and culture of the organization he built and still walks through the brewery each morning to greet his employees and discuss the issues of the day.

Join us at this month's membership luncheon to hear John's story of entrepreneurship which led to one of the most prosperous specialty breweries in the United States.

In addition, our newest Chamber members will be presented in our quarterly "Chamber Debut". Attendees will receive a description from each business that has joined the Leawood Chamber in the past 90 days.

Chamber Members: As an added benefit, members will receive via email a spreadsheet with contact information of all the other member attendees at the event. This is another way we're working to make sure the Leawood Chamber is a great networking resource for Chamber members.

Kansas Legislative Update 01-28-2011

Legislative Report for the Leawood Chamber of Commerce
For week ending January 28, 2011
From Bob Vancrum, Kansas Government Affairs Consultant

This week the pace picked up rapidly in Topeka as key committees began to work on significant pieces of legislation.  The highlight for the week was action on the Governor’s 2011 budget rescission bills (HB2014 and SB16).  As introduced, both make reductions mid-year for FY2011 (which ends in only 5 months).  As you may recall, it removes $75.00 base state aid per pupil from the schools, and cuts 2,000 unfilled positions across all state agencies.

Budget
In the House Appropriations Committee on Tuesday, it was clear the majority didn’t think the Governor went far enough.  They cut FY2011 further by reducing all agency salaries and wages by 7.5% for the last six pay periods of this fiscal year.  All state employees (with no exceptions) are cut the same 7.5%.  In higher education, the savings are to be transferred to the deferred maintenance of buildings (this avoids a federal penalty for non-maintenance of effort).  In addition, the committee directed the Secretary of Administration to begin the process of selling 10% of state assets.

On Thursday, the Senate Ways and Means Committee disagreed.  They actually ended up increasing the Governor’s recommendation significantly by restoring some of the recommended cuts in state ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)

Saint Luke’s Hospice Awarded $500,000 Challenge Grant

Saint Luke’s Hospice has been awarded a $500,000 Challenge Grant from The J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation as part of a fundraising campaign for a freestanding, inpatient hospice facility. The award requires that $1.5 million be raised by January 2012 to be eligible to receive the grant. The $7 million project seeks $3.5 million in fundraising.

Currently, Saint Luke’s Hospice has received commitments for nearly 57 percent of this goal, which includes the Mabee Foundation challenge grant. Since 1975, Saint Luke’s Hospice has provided compassionate and dignified care to Kansas City-area patients and their families as a division of Saint Luke’s Health System Home Care Services. In fact, it was one of our country’s first hospice programs.

While in-home care will remain an important service of Saint Luke’s Hospice, not all patients at the end of life can be cared for adequately at home. A hospice residence can provide a comfortable, home-like setting where patients receive end-of-life care and their loved ones receive emotional support. But because Saint Luke’s Hospice doesn’t have an inpatient facility, Saint Luke’s must transfer more than 200 patients per year outside its health system to Kansas City’s other freestanding inpatient hospice program. This loss has a profound impact on the continuum of care as patients and their families have developed long-term relationships with Saint Luke’s doctors a ...
