2007 State of the County Address

The Leawood Chamber of Commerce and the Johnson County Chairman of the Board Annabeth Surbaugh cordially invite you to attend the 2007 State of the County Address. In conjunction with the Johnson County Public Policy Council. This will also be a great opportunity to network with members and other chambers throughout the area.

The cost is $28 / person, or $275 for a table of 8. Advanced reservations and payment are required. Please RSVP and send payment by 5pm on Tuesday, March 20th. We are unable to refund on cancellations received after the registration deadline. Unfortunately we will not be able to accommodate walk ups at this event. The Chamber accepts checks, Visa, Discover, Mastercard and American Express. Make checks payable to the Leawood Chamber of Commerce.

This month, Thomas Thornton, the first president and CEO of the Kansas Bioscience Authority, will present a short program. Thomas joins the KS Bioscience Authority with a strong background in business and economic development. He will talk about his background and provide his thoughts and ideas on how this group will guide the state in its bioscience investments. You won't want to miss this informative presentation!

2007 Legislative Breakfast Series

The Leawood Chamber of Commerce and the Johnson County Public Policy Council sponsor the Legislative Breakfast Series to enhance the communication and exchange of information between the business community and the Johnson County state legislative delegation. Legislators will be on hand to discuss issues and offer the most current legislative updates. All meetings will take place at the Ritz Charles in Overland Park, 9300 West 137th Street. Casual attire is requested. Breakfast will be served promptly at 7:30 a.m.

Join us Saturday, February 10th at 12:00 p.m. at Outback Steakhouse located at Johnson Drive and Broadmoor in Mission, Kansas. It is $25 per person and all proceeds go to SAFEHOME.

The menu includes a Bloomin' Onion, a salad, salmon, steak or chicken and side items plus dessert!

Idiots' Open Golf Tournament

Cost: Registration fees are $75 a player, $300 for a team of four, $400 for hole sponsorship, and $600 for hole sponsorship plus a team. Registration fees include nine holes of golf with the option to finish the other nine holes after the tournament, brightly colored golf balls, hot lunch and coffee.

This winter tournament exemplifies the hospice spirit of making the most of every day. The event goes on no matter what the weather brings!

Funds raised from the tournament, silent, and live auctions will help provide comfort and care to Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care patients and families.

Tournament is a four-person scramble format. The event is sponsored by Medical One.

Shawnee Mission Medical Center Designated a Bariatric Center of Excellence

MERRIAM, Kan. – Shawnee Mission Medical Center (SMMC) has been named an American Society for Bariatric Surgery (ASBS) Center of Excellence.

The ASBS designation recognizes surgical programs with a demonstrated track record of favorable outcomes in bariatric surgery. According to a study released in July 2005 by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the number of bariatric surgeries performed in the U.S. more than quadrupled between 1998 and 2002 – from 13,386 to 71,733 procedures. Faced with clinical evidence that the most experienced and best-run bariatric surgery programs have by far the lowest rates of complications, the ASBS Centers of Excellence program was created to recognize bariatric surgery centers that perform well and to help surgeons and hospitals continue to improve the quality and safety of care provided.

To earn designation as a Center of Excellence, SMMC’s Bariatric Program underwent a series of site inspections during which all aspects of the program’s surgical processes were closely examined and data on health outcomes was collected.
