Leawood Art Exhibit & Reception

Contact: April Bishop – aprilb@leawood.org 913-339-6700 x157

The Leawood Arts Council and M&I Bank will host a community event to celebrate the work of local artists. The two groups have joined together again for the fifteenth year of this popular art series. This show will feature the works of artists, Venus Auxier, Jim Hamil, Susan Hill, Belinda Riley and Rick Stone.

Venus Auxier naturally preserves botanicals to allow the viewer new and unique ways to appreciate nature. Her art is inspired by memories of running barefoot in the park, afternoon walks in the woods, or picnics by the lake. Six years ago she created “Nature’s Illumination” to share her love of nature with others. Her gardening hobby combined with her experience in book repair and preservation has proven helpful in creating her art. This self taught technique of botanical preservation results in beautiful images.

Auxier has spent most of her life in Johnson County. When Venus isn’t involved with her art she can be found at her full time job at the Johnson County Library.

Jim Hamil’s watercolors may be the most recognized paintings in the region. His prints, books and not ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)

Crying on Trains

The Leawood Stage Company is pleased to present a script-in-hand dramatic reading of Crying on Trains by local playwright David Hanson in the Oak Room on the lower level of Leawood City Hall, 4800 Town Center Drive. Friday and Saturday performances will begin at 8:00 p.m. A Sunday matinee will begin at 2:00 pm.

Due to the success of last year’s dramatic reading of “Mary & Myra” Leawood Stage Company has chosen to continue this format annually each spring.

Crying on Trains is an exploration of issues such as Alzheimer’s, and euthanasia, facing many of us with aging loved ones. The original idea for Hanson’s script was conceived as part of the Metropolitan Ensemble Theatre’s Playwrights Intensive. It was later produced as a short one act play that met with great response at the Barn Players 6 X 10 Festival in the fall of 2008. Hanson has now expanded that script into a full length, heartfelt play that will debut with the Leawood Stage Company.

LSC will host a unique opportunity for audiences to meet playwright, David Hanson. Following the performances there will be a question and answer period with the playwright. Find ou ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)

Kansas Legislative Update 03-05-2010

Legislative Report for the Leawood Chamber of Commerce
For week ending March 5, 2010
From Bob Vancrum, Kansas Government Affairs Consultant

The pace of work in the committees and on the floor has slowed down a lot since the turnaround, and the budget crisis seems to get worse daily.  February receipts showed the state is now down $106 million below estimates made in early November, meaning the state is now projected to be nearly $500 million short of meeting its known obligations for the 2011 fiscal year notwithstanding cuts in projected spending totaling almost $1 billion since this time last year.

On Friday, the Governor announced further actions trying to shore up the current year’s budget including taking an additional $87 million from highway spending, and deferring payments into the state retirement fund. I’m sure he would agree that neither is good policy. In his press conference the Governor said too many tax breaks had been granted in the recent past, and even said the Kansas estate and franchise tax need to be reinstated.

Other significant developments this week included:

Small Business
Sen. Sub for HB2676, which would have made significant changes in unemployment taxes and benefits to try to shore up the state’s depleted unemployment fund  was debated on the Senate floor on Thursday.  At the end of a long afternoon of debate and amendm ... Menorah Medical Center is One of 18 Sites in the U.S. Approved for a Clinical Trial Procedure

Menorah Medical Center is the only hospital in the Kansas City area to offer a clinical trial with Superion™ Interspinous Spacer, an investigational medical device intended to relieve chronic pain caused by moderate spinal stenosis.

“The Superion™ Interspinous Spacer belongs to a new category of treatments designed to relieve pressure on the compressed nerve roots while preserving the patient’s anatomy and ability to maintain motion,” says Harold Hess, MD, neurosurgeon at Menorah, who leads the clinical trial. Hess is among only 17 other physicians or primary investigators in the country approved for the clinical trial.

Lumbar spinal stenosis is characterized by a narrowing of the passageways in the spine that are occupied by the spinal cord and the nerve roots. “Ideal candidates for this procedure are ones that experience leg, buttock and groin pain resulting from pressure on the spinal nerve roots that can develop from walking and/or standing for long periods,” says Hess. Hess began enrolling and treating patients in January 2010 and will accept qualified patients up until June 2011.

During the procedure the spacer is implanted between the spinous processes through a tube that is approximately the diameter of a quarter. Once implanted the device can act as a support column to open the passageways through which the nerve roots travel from the lumbar spine to the legs.  The w ...
