The Leawood Arts Council and M&I Bank will host a unique community event to celebrate local artists. The two organizations have joined together for the fourteenth year of this collaboration. This show will feature the works of artists, Julie Johnson, Elaine Lierly Jones, Jeff Walker, and Pat Woodworth.
Photographer Julie Johnson has participated in numerous juried art shows across the region. A love of nature and travel provide the framework for exploring with her camera in hand. The excitement of a new image can let the mind travel far from the ordinary, whether an image is a handful of daffodils from the local grocery or a small Mexican village.
After many years as an accountant and full time mom, Julie took a photography class at JCCC. Her classmates were half her age, but she found that her life experiences provided invaluable perspective for artistic expression. Johnson’s award winning photos have appeared in travel books, magazines and corporate galleries.

On Monday, March 16, from 5-8 p.m., the Kansas City Wizards will host a family event to kickoff the 2009 Major League Soccer season at Paradise Park in Lee’s Summit, Mo. Wizards fans will be able to enter Paradise Park and play games at a vast discount. The Wizards begin the 2009 season Saturday, March 21 at 7:30 p.m. CT against Toronto FC at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
Fans can enjoy attractions such as Go Karts, Rock Climbing Wall, Miniature Golf, Bumper Cars, Foam Factory, and the Children's Edutainment Center. Wizards players will be on hand to sign autographs and interact with fans, and the new Starting 11 Girls will be introduced as well.

Leawood Arts Council Studio Tour
For the first time, The Leawood Arts Council will host a traveling studio tour on Saturday, March 21st.
This unique tour of the Crossroads Arts District will include private tours at Belger Arts Center, Pi Gallery and Lawrence Lithography. The motor coach will depart from Leawood City Hall at 10:30 am and return at 2:30 pm. The registration price will cover the cost of lunch and transportation.
The Belger Arts Center, located in the Belger Building, has exhibition space and offices on the third floor with gallery space on the ground floor for large installations and monumental sculpture. The Center has a varied exhibition program encompassing art and design from the John & Maxine Belger Family Foundation as well as from generous collectors and artists from around the world. The Foundation was created to focus on the works of a few specific artists, collecting and documenting their work in depth throughout their careers to educate the public. Capitol Federal Savings Bank recently celebrated the Grand Opening of their new location in the Nall Valley shopping center located at 151st and Nall.

Electronics Recycling Day

The City of Leawood is teaming up with the City of Overland Park in hosting their annual
Electronics Recycling Day
Saturday, April 25, 2009
8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Shawnee Mission South High School
5800 W. 107th St.
(between Nall and Lamar)
Residents can bring their unwanted electronics to this collection event.
There is no charge to recycle computer CPUs, keyboards, mice, VCRs, stereos, scanners and personal printers. Charges will apply to computer monitors, televisions and large printers.
To recycle 10 or more computers, contact Surplus Exchange at 816/472-0444 to schedule a pickup at your location.
Some of the collected equipment will be inspected, reconditioned and reused whenever possible. Obsolete or non-working equipment will be disassembled and the components recycled. NOTE: All electronics collected are handled by companies that are certified by the Basel Action Network.
Over the past four years, Overland Park has sponsored several recycling events and netted more than 407,000 pounds of unwanted electronics, including more than 2,800 monitors and 2,250 printers.
