Shawnee Mission School District Ballot Issue for April 3, 2007

On Tuesday, April 3, voters in the Shawnee Mission School District will be asked to decide whether to permit the school district to increase its local option budget allowance by 1 percent.

The 1 percent is estimated to raise $1.6 million for Shawnee Mission schools. All of the money raised through the LOB remains in the Shawnee Mission School District and will be used to provide additional teachers and resources that support student instruction.

Increasing the LOB by 1 percent means the school district will have the authority to levy local taxes equal to 31 percent of its general fund. This increase will cost patrons less than $1 per month based on a $200,000 home value.

The state of Kansas currently authorizes $7,678 per pupil in Shawnee Mission, while the state average expenditure per pupil is $10,247. In available funding for operations, 267 of the 300 districts in Kansas outrank Shawnee Mission.
