The Leawood Stage Company is pleased to present a script-in-hand dramatic reading of Crying on Trains by local playwright David Hanson in the Oak Room on the lower level of Leawood City Hall, 4800 Town Center Drive. Friday and Saturday performances will begin at 8:00 p.m. A Sunday matinee will begin at 2:00 pm.
Due to the success of last year’s dramatic reading of “Mary & Myra” Leawood Stage Company has chosen to continue this format annually each spring.
Crying on Trains is an exploration of issues such as Alzheimer’s, and euthanasia, facing many of us with aging loved ones. The original idea for Hanson’s script was conceived as part of the Metropolitan Ensemble Theatre’s Playwrights Intensive. It was later produced as a short one act play that met with great response at the Barn Players 6 X 10 Festival in the fall of 2008. Hanson has now expanded that script into a full length, heartfelt play that will debut with the Leawood Stage Company.
LSC will host a unique opportunity for audiences to meet playwright, David Hanson. Following the performances there will be a question and answer period with the playwright. Find ou ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)

Legislative Report for the Leawood Chamber of Commerce
For week ending March 12, 2010
From Bob Vancrum, Kansas Government Affairs Consultant
Senate Ways and Means Committee has now assembled SB556, its 2011 budget bill, by tentatively approving $100 million in budget cuts which do not cut Higher Education or K-12 base-operations funding education further. Even with $100 million in reductions, the Senate’s 2011 budget bill (SB556) is over $300 million short of balancing expected revenues against expenditures. Senate leadership has directed both the tax and budget committee chairs to find new revenues to raise $300 million.
The House Budget committee charged with Education and higher education will adopt their final report Monday afternoon and it’s been scheduled for action Wednesday morning in House Appropriations. We’ll get our first look at what additional cuts the House Speaker is planning in education and higher education funding, but it has to be near $300 million unless he has reversed course on tax increases.
PEAK Jobs Incentives
Hearings on HB2538 (expansion of PEAK incentives) were held Tuesday in the Senate Commerce Committee. We have heard that the Governor will veto the bill if the fiscal note is not significantly reduced. The discussion is centered on trading HB2538 for changes to the Business and Job Development income tax credit (B& ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)
Chamber President Kevin Jeffries submitted written testimony to the Kansas Senate Assessment & Taxation Committee on Wednesday in opposition to SB 567. This legislation would levy a new tax on sugared beverages that could increase the cost of a can of soda by as much as 10 cents per can. The body of our testimony is found below:
“While making no value judgments regarding the health issues surrounding this legislation, The Chamber’s concern centers around singling out a particular Kansas industry and putting its products at a competitive disadvantage when compared to other surrounding states, as well as the uncertain potential for net added revenue for the Kansas budget.
For many years, the Leawood Chamber’s legislative position statement has included language that stresses fair competition in the marketplace. When Kansas retailers, including grocery stores, convenience stores, and restaurants, that sell beverages containing the natural sweeteners targeted in this legislation, are put at a competitive disadvantage due to higher costs for their products, this is not a positive outcome for Kansas businesses. This kind of tax, can, and will, reduce retail sales in Kansas, thereby reducing State and local sales tax revenue in Kansas. It is especially a concern for retailers in Kansas counties that border other states, such as Missouri, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Colorado. Since Johnson County is one of t ...
