The Leawood Arts Council and M&I Bank will host a community event to celebrate the work of local artists. The two groups have joined together again for the fifteenth year of this popular art series. This show will feature the works of artists, Venus Auxier, Jim Hamil, Susan Hill, Belinda Riley and Rick Stone.
Venus Auxier naturally preserves botanicals to allow the viewer new and unique ways to appreciate nature. Her art is inspired by memories of running barefoot in the park, afternoon walks in the woods, or picnics by the lake. Six years ago she created “Nature’s Illumination” to share her love of nature with others. Her gardening hobby combined with her experience in book repair and preservation has proven helpful in creating her art. This self taught technique of botanical preservation results in beautiful images.
Auxier has spent most of her life in Johnson County. When Venus isn’t involved with her art she can be found at her full time job at the Johnson County Library.
Jim Hamil’s watercolors may be the most recognized paintings in the region. His prints, books and not ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)
Legislative Report for the Leawood Chamber of Commerce
For week ending February 26, 2010
From Bob Vancrum, Kansas Government Affairs Consultant
The Legislature took Monday off as they traditionally do at the midpoint of the session. The House also treated Tuesday as a proforma day, so members (at least on the House side) were only in the building on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Not surprisingly, formal action was limited. There were some significant developments however.
Tax Policy
HB2538, which expands the PEAK income tax credit program to include jobs retained when a business is sold to an out of state buyer, as well as those attracted to Kansas or expanding in Kansas, cleared the House Taxation Committee on Thursday. It was then debated and passed by the full House on Friday by an 84-27 vote.
HB2549, which would repeal a variety of sales tax exemptions, is scheduled for amendment and debate on Monday in House Taxation Committee.
Health Care
In a somewhat surprising development, the House concurred in Sen. Sub. for HB2221, the statewide ban on smoking in public places passed the Senate last year. A motion to concur passed the House (over the opposition of House leadership) by a 68/54 margin. It now goes to the Governor directly for his signature and becomes law on July 1, 2010.

Heartland—a physician-owned hospital—is one of 84 nationwide organizations to receive a 2009 Summit Award, and one of 32 impatient facilities chosen for the award based on its superior level of inpatient services. “We’re very honored to receive this accolade that publicly recognizes our continued commitment to provide the best customer service for patients and their families here at Heartland Spine & Specialty Hospital,” said Don Burman, Chief Executive Officer. “We go above and beyond to ensure each person’s interaction with our facility is one that provides the utmost level of care and comfort.”
Heartland was recognized because of action taken to reduce noise stemming from the nurse’s station that was hindering patients’ ability to rest and recover. The inpatient unit started a “HUSH” campaign, which included implementing quiet hours in the afternoon and night, dimming lights as a precursor to reduce noise lev ...
