Todd Adams will be our speaker for April. Todd is the Vice President of Sales with Sporting KC (formerly The Wizards). Sporting Kansas City enters the organization’s 16th year in Major League Soccer riding a wave of development on and off the field. Two changes heading into the 2011 season represent perhaps the most momentous in the club’s history.

The organization is currently putting the finishing touches on its new $200 million dollar, world-class soccer stadium, opening in June 2011 near Village West in Kansas City, Kansas. After 15 seasons without a permanent home, including 12 seasons at a stadium built for football and three seasons at a stadium built for baseball, the team will now call America’s finest soccer facility home.

Please plan to attend so you can hear more........

Effective April 1, 2011 Leawood Sales Tax Will Drop by .4%

On April 1, 2007, after voter approval, a 0.4 cent Public Safety Sales tax was put into effect in order to accumulate funds for building a new Leawood Justice Center.  The sales tax was to expire on April 1st, 2012 or when a total of $10,000,000 had been received.  The $10,000,000 maximum has been met; therefore the tax will expire on April 1, 2011.

To recap, effective on April 1, 2011, the Leawood Sales tax will drop .4%.  For businesses located anywhere other than Park Place or the One Nineteen development, the rate will now be 8.65%.  In those developments, the rate will be 9.65%.  For organizations charging sales tax in Leawood, be sure to update your records to reflect this change.

Kansas Legislative Update 03-25-2011

Legislative Report for the Leawood Chamber of Commerce
For week ending March 25, 2011
From Bob Vancrum, Consultant

This week the Kansas legislature hit its second deadline.  Action on legislation other than budget, tax and items exempted by the leaders is now over.  The week’s developments include:

SB1, which dedicates a portion of all future growth in revenue to cut income tax rates, passed the House and was declared materially altered by the Senate President, and sent to Senate Assessment and Tax.  It is clear that Senate leadership does not favor this measure which would reduce revenues at a time when it is trying to cover a $500 million shortfall.

The House and Senate versions of the main budget bill differ significantly both in their approach and their ending balance.  It is possible there will be no budget when they adjourn the regular session at the end of next week. House Appropriations apparently completed its work on a budget which cuts proposed spending $75 million lower than Governor Brownback’s proposed budget.  It would reduce 2012 spending on k-12 education below the $232 per pupil cut the Governor recommended.  It also makes substantial cuts in state employee salaries (7.5% for $100,000 and lesser amounts all the way to $40,000 a year employees) as well as large cuts in the Department of Health and Environment and in home and community-based for both Medicaid and th ... Get informed, get involved. Get out and VOTE on April 5!

We are fortunate to live in a country where citizens have the opportunity to elect individuals to represent their interests in government.  However, did you know that often less than 10% of registered voters vote in Primary elections?  That means some races could be decided by less than 6% of all registered voters.

This year, make a decision to make a difference!
