2008 Legislative Breakfast Series

The Leawood Chamber of Commerce and the Johnson County Public Policy Council sponsor the Legislative Breakfast Series to enhance the communication and exchange of information between the business community and the Johnson County state legislative delegation. Legislators will be on hand to discuss issues and offer the most current legislative updates. All meetings are at the Ritz Charles Overland Park, 9000 West 137th Street. Casual attire is requested. Breakfast is served promptly at 7:30 a.m.

This casino-night fundraiser supports the non-profit’s five programs aimed at assisting underprivileged youth in crisis. This year, the second annual Stack the Decks will take place at the more spacious Overland Park Convention Center, as AYS prepares for more than twice the turnout than last year’s event.

Stack the Decks will host a glamorous evening of activities reminiscent of a night on the Las Vegas Strip: blackjack, poker, craps, and roulette casino games are sure to keep guests trying their hand at lady luck.

For those who want to bid on great prizes, a silent auction will give guests the chance to take home everything from Dr. Phil tickets to a rejuvenating microdermabrasion facial at the Center for Facial Plastic Surgery in Olathe.

Members of the Friends of the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival will present the program of Shakespeare’s work in honor of his birthday. Leawood Chamber Board Opposed to Changing District Court Judge Selection Process

In response to concerns about the business impact of the proposed changes to the selection of district court judges in Johnson County, the Leawood Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors unanimously voted to adopt a resolution in opposition to the proposal appearing on the November 4 ballot.  The ballot proposal would change our current merit based district court judge selection process to one where judicial decisions would be exposed to the potential of being influenced by campaign contributions.

A system where judges are elected like legislators requires them to campaign and seek contributions from the same attorneys they hear cases from, creating the very real potential for bias and conflicts of interest.  According to Leawood Chamber Board of Directors Chair, Tom Robinett, “Imagine your company is being sued, and your attorney leans over to you in the court room and says he is really sorry, but he supported the judge’s opponent in the last election.” Judges would also have to spend time away from hearing cases in our already over-burdened judicial system to make public appearances to campaign and attend fund-raising events. 

A change to partisan elections could have a tendency to force judicial candidates to become political both in their election campaigns and in their consideration of issues and decisions required by them as a judge.  There is also cost to everyone, both in the time and money involved in electing judg ... Susan Sinclair-Shields creates breathtaking works of aviation art.  She has painted many different forms of aircrafts over skylines and oceanic views.
