A Taste of Leawood 2006

Cost: Admission is $60 in advance, $70 the day of the event.

One of the area`s best events now entering its ninth year! Enjoy a casual evening of culinary splendor from the area`s finest restaurants under the stars in the Leawood City Hall Courtyard.

The jazzy blues sounds of the Dan Doran Band will fill the air as patrons enjoy wines, spirits and tantalizing selections from many area restaurant menus. We expect a crowd of 600 people to enjoy jazz and samplings of the Leawood area`s finest cuisine, beverages and spirits in the Leawood City Hall Courtyard on Saturday, June 17th from 7pm to 11pm.

Each attendee will receive a business card and a desciption from each businesses that has joined the Leawood Chamber in the past 90 days. You'll have a chance to associate each new member business with the person(s) representing that business.

Our program will also feature "Super-Charged Networking". A portion of the time at this event will be dedicated soley to networking with the attendees seated at your table. We make every effort to seat you with others who are not in your industry, maximizing your ability to gain quality networking time.

Last but not least, we'll be deomonstrating some of the exiting new features of the Chamber's web site, including the Community Calendar and the News and Announcments section.

News & Announcements

Ground Breaking Event on Saturday at BVRC

Blue Valley Recreation Commission (BVRC) invites the public to a ground breaking event at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 29, at the BVRC Recreation Complex. The event begins with a ceremony held near the northwest corner of 137th Street and Grandview in Overland Park. Included in the ceremony is a 15-minute program and turning of soil by Sluggerrr of The Kansas City Royals, Blue Valley youth, and BVRC representatives.

The event convenes for refreshments at the main complex building, 9701 W. 137th Street. This ceremony marks the beginning of a construction project and coincides with Opening Day of the BVRC youth baseball/softball 2006 season. Improvements to baseball/softball fields include eight lighted baseball/softball fields; paved parking; six batting cages; an open, multi-use sports area; irrigation; concession stands with restrooms; and two picnic shelters. Construction began on April 20; the new fields will be available for play by May 1, 2007.

KU Edwards Campus to be site of nation’s fourth Confucius Institute

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas and China’s Ministry of Education have announced they will establish a Confucius Institute, the fourth to open in the United States, at KU’s Edwards Campus in Overland Park next month.

China’s vice minister for education, Wu Qidi (pronounced WOO CHEE-DEE) will lead a Chinese delegation to Kansas on May 4 for a dedication ceremony at the Edwards Campus, 12600 Quivira Road. The Confucius Institute at KU will serve communities, businesses, schools, government, nonprofit organizations and the media throughout Kansas, the Great Plains region and the United States by offering community-based Chinese language instruction, supporting the training and professional development of Chinese language teachers and promoting outreach programs on Chinese culture.

KU's Confucius Institute will occupy several offices in Regnier Hall and offer courses starting this fall. “KU was one of the first universities in this nation to establish direct exchange programs in China,” said Chancellor Robert Hemenway. “Having the Confucius Institute here reflects the strength of KU’s connection to China as well as ou ... Shoulder Problems: How to Keep Pain out of Reach

On May 10, from 9-10 a.m. at Saint Luke's South, Dan Gurley, M.D., will discuss common causes of shoulder pain experienced by older adults such as: rotator cuff tears, impingement, tendonitis, bursitis, bone spurs, arthritis, and fractures.

He will explore prevention strategies, home remedies, non-surgical treatment, as well as surgical options for these common problems.
