Our guest speaker at this month's luncheon will be Leawood resident, Leo E. Morton, the Chancellor of the University of Missouri - Kansas City.

Chancellor Morton will share with the membership the importance of institutions of higher education to the vitality of a metropolitan area and how UMKC fits into the community's future.

Prior to becoming the Chancellor at UMKC in December 2008, Morton was a University trustee since 2000. During his third year as the Chairman of the Trustees Board, he stepped down to serve as the interim chancellor. Outside of UMKC, he is very involved in community organizations including serving as chairman of the Board of Trustees for Menorah Medical Center, Board of Trustees for MRI, the Economic Development Corporation, the Kansas City Area Development Council, and the Ironhorse Golf Course committee.

The Johnson County Public Policy Council, which is comprised of nine Johnson County area chambers and the Greater KC Chamber of Commerce, sponsors the annual Legislative Breakfast Series to enhance the communication and exchange of information between the business community and the Johnson County state legislative delegation. Legislators will offer legislative updates and discuss issues. Breakfast is served promptly at 7:30 a.m. Casual attire is recommended.

Featured Senators and Representatives: Senator Terrie Huntington, John Vratil; Representatives Milack Talia, Owen Donohoe, Mike Kiegerl.

Shred-it ShredFEST

NBC Action News is gearing up for the fifth annual Shred-It event. It will be held Saturday, April 10th, from 8:00 AM until Noon. We'll shred up to 3 boxes or bags of your paper for free! It's a service made possible by NBC Action News, Call for Action, Commerce Bank, the Better Business Bureau and of course those giant shredding trucks provided free by Shred-it.
 
There will be five Commerce Bank locations throughout the metro where you can drop off old files, records and other paper items to be shredded. You will also be able to have computer hard drives crushed at one location, in Prairie Village, KS. And new this year there will be a chance to donate to TLC for Children and Families.

American Roots Music Workshop at the Oxford School

The Historic One-Room Oxford Schoolhouse, located in Ironwoods Park, 147th & Mission Road in Leawood, Kansas, will host two hands-on music workshops on Saturday, April 10th. Session I will be designed for children 4 to 7 years old and runs from 9:00 to 10:00 am. Session II will be for children 8 and older and runs from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. See the web site for event cost.

Each workshop will include a performance and presentation of traditional American Roots Rhythms by instructor, Scott Klamm. Children will build and decorate their own percussion instrument. Each session will conclude with a performance by the group on their own new instruments.

Old-time musician Scott Klamm is no stranger to the Historic Oxford Schoolhouse. Scott has performed at many of the past events held at the schoolhouse. Scott plays traditional American instruments including mountain dulcimer, Appalachian mouth bow, auto harp, guitar, and mandolin.

Join Honorary Chairs, Peggy and Terry Dunn, for the Amphitheater of Dreams Gala 2010 and see the master plan for the vision of a new Ironwoods Amphitheater. The Gala celebration will take place the evening of April 16th at the Lodge in Ironwoods Park starting at 7:00 pm.

The Amphitheater of Dreams Gala will be themed to the Stage Company’s 2010 summer musical production, Guys & Dolls. Dress as a “Guy” or “Doll” from any decade. The evening will feature dinner by Yia Yia’s Euro Bistro, with drinks by Boulevard Brewing and Rimann Liquors. Entertainment will be presented by Comedy to Go. Door prizes provided by Leawood Chamber of Commerce members. Enjoy the festivities, see the future plans, and stay to dance.

The Leawood Amphitheater Steering Committee, in coordination with The Leawood Stage Company, the Leawood Arts Council and the Leawood Foundation, will begin a campaign to raise funds to develop the current simple amphitheater space into a first-class performing arts facility for the community. Hear how each person in the community can participate in building this dream for the future.

Saint Luke’s Hospital using new liquid treatment for brain aneurysms

Patients with brain aneurysms — a weakness or protrusion in a major blood vessel in the brain —  now have access to a novel new treatment option available in the Kansas City area only at Saint Luke’s Brain and Stroke Institute.
 
William Holloway, M.D., a neurointerventional radiologist at Saint Luke’s Hospital, is one of only a few physicians in the nation treating patients using a new FDA-approved liquid embolic system for treating wide-necked brain aneurysms. The first procedure was performed at Saint Luke’s on March 15.
 
Brain aneurysms have an opening where the aneurysm arises from the artery or blood vessel, causing a portion of the vessel wall to balloon out. Left untreated, this abnormality puts an individual at risk for stroke or death if the aneurysm breaks open and bleeds.
 
“A wide-necked brain aneurysm occurs in about 25 percent of patients with brain aneurysms,” said Dr. Holloway. “Some brain aneurysms can be difficult to treat with traditional surgery, because of their location deep within the brain. With Onyx® HD 500, we are able to use a minimally invasive endovascular procedure to treat the aneurysm from within the blood vessel.”
