SMMC Clinical Trial Offers Hope for Patients Unable to Regulate Blood Pressure

Rheos Hypertension (HT) Therapy, a new medical device-based treatment, offers new hope for patients with drug-resistant hypertension. Shawnee Mission Medical Center (SMMC) is the only Kansas City hospital to offer the treatment through a phase II clinical trail. The goal of the trial is to demonstrate the safety and effectiveness of the Rheos HT System in patients who have high blood pressure and are resistant to drug treatments and lifestyle modifications.

The system electrically activates the baroreceptors, the body’s natural pressure sensors in the carotid arteries. When activated, the baroreceptors send signals through the carotid nerves to the brain, which are interpreted as a rise in blood pressure. The brain works to counteract the perceived blood pressure increase by sending signals to other parts of the body to reduce blood pressure, including the heart, blood vessels and kidneys. By mimicking the function of the body’s natural pressure sensors, the Rheos HT System provides what physicians describe as a “physiologically rational” method of reducing blood pressure.

Candidates for this procedure are individuals who are on at least three blood pressure medications, with at least one being a diuretic. According to Vascular Surgeon Michael J. Beezley, MD, the Rheos procedure is unique in the sense that it uses the body’s own natural blood pressure sensors (baroreflex) to control blood pressure. The Rheos HT System is implante ... HORSE n' Around Tournament at The Jewish Community Center

The Jewish Community Center presents H.O.R.S.E. ‘n Around, a basketball tournament on May 17 at The Center at 5801 W. 115th Street.

The competition, which is just what it sounds like – a simple game of H.O.R.S.E. – is open to the public, and designed for anyone who can throw a ball. But, with a chance to win $10,000 at the final regional tournament to be held in Kansas City in July, the stakes are much higher than the H.O.R.S.E you might remember as a child.

The Center’s tournament is the first of its kind in the country, and was born out of a game that is now becoming a national phenomenon. The inspiration for the Tournament came from David Kalb, who defeated Lebron James in H.O.R.S.E last year on a Malibu basketball court where scenes from "White Men Can't Jump" were filmed. It was Kalb's improbable victory over James that recently became famous on YouTube.

After doing some research on the Kalb-James match up, Keith Zimmerman, local sports promoter, created The H.O.R.S.E ‘n Around Tournament and will bring the nationals to Kansas City in July. Sam Lacey, former Kansas City Kings player, will be at The Center from noon to 2 P.M., for an autograph signing and meet and greet. Also, one lucky participant will be chosen by drawing to play a demonstration game of H.O.R.S.E. against Lacey.

The event also features a silent auction at The Center from May 11-17, with sports memorabilia from Tiger Woods, George Bre ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)
