The Art in Public Places Initiative of the Leawood Arts Council is proud to announce the installation of a sculpture by Jesse Small. The sculpture titled “Cloud Gate” will be the focal point of I-Lan Park, which was developed to honor Leawood’s Sister City relationship with I-Lan, Taiwan.

Jesse Small was commissioned for this piece, specifically for this location, because of his intimate knowledge of the orient. Small has spent many years working and studying in Jingdezhen and Shenzhen, China. This is the a central theme of his artwork.

“Cloud Gate” is constructed of steel with a galvanized zinc finish. The overall color is silver/gray. The top decorative portion of the gateway is intricately cut into lace-like clouds. At each corner there are groups of forms representing paper lanterns. This Asian influenced “gate” sculpture stands 21’ high by 19’ wide.

The placement of the piece serves as an inviting entrance to the park and will open from east and west, allowing viewers to walk through the opening. Passing though the gateway represents the social implications of the gateway serving as an open exchange ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)

Menorah Medical Center Celebrates National EMS Week

Physicians, emergency rooms and Johnson County emergency medical services (EMS) providers have forged an invaluable partnership of action when a 9-1-1 call is made.

Consider Elizabeth Kupchin, who can now add “survivor of cardiac arrest” to her life’s resume. Following a dramatic near-death experience more than 12 months ago while on the job at an Overland Park telecommunications company, Kupchin has gratitude for the chain of responders whose quick reactions helped save her life. That chain includes two co-workers who knew CPR; paramedics answering the 9-1-1 call; a fast-acting Menorah Medical Center Emergency Department team of nurses and physicians; and a cardiologist who administered the revolutionary Code ICE protocol on Kupchin.

Though she can’t recall what happened following her sudden collapse amidst a sea of cubicles, Kupchin vividly remembers waking up at Menorah Medical Center—part of HCA Midwest Health System, Kansas City’s largest healthcare network—five days later to hear a miraculous story pieced together by her physician, Ujjaval M. Patel, MD, FACC, and her husband.

“The last thing I remember is heading to the on-campus clinic at work on April 15, 2010, because I had been complaining of not feeling well all week,” says Kupchin. “The next thing? I’m looking at my husband on April 20, asking him why I’m in the hospital.”

Kansas Legislative Update 05-06-2011

For the Second Week of the 2011 Veto Session of the Kansas Legislature
Dated May 6, 2011, from Bob Vancrum, Consultant

The second week of the veto session did bring some positive developments, but major differences over the budget are still preventing the legislature from wrapping up its work.

Senate and House conferees did reach agreement upon the remaining tax issues.  The House agreed to confine changes in PEAK to adding job retention as a purpose and extending PEAK incentives for not-for-profit entities.  The House also dropped its demand for passage of its version of SB1, which would have mandated a portion of future growth in state revenues to cuts in income taxes.  The Senate agreed that the period to utilize existing high performance incentive program (HPIP) credits would be extended for an additional six years but refused to agree to allow any member of an affiliated group of companies to share and utilize those credits.

The House has already voted upon this conference committee report in (SB193) and it passed by a vote of 107-10.  Once this has passed the Senate next week, the House will vote upon a conference committee report for SB196 which adopts the Governor’s unlimited expensing of business personal property purchases, eliminates business and job development tax credits, restricts grants of future HPIP credits and begins building a closing fund for economic development p ...
