The Safe States Alliance honored SAFEHOME's THE OUTRAGE with their Innovative Initiative of the Year Award at their annual conference on April 15th in Ann Arbor, MI.
This national award recognizes a unique and creative program that has the potential to substantially decrease injuries and violence in the communities that it serves. THE OUTRAGE is an educational theatre performance piece that addresses the topics of teen dating violence and sexual assault. Written and directed by SAFEHOME's Educational & Prevention Coordinator Allison Basinger, THE OUTRAGE is performed by high school student volunteers from Blue Valley Northwest and Olathe Northwest.
Following the performances for area middle and high school students, THE OUTRAGE actors answer questions from their peers. According to Allison, "THE OUTRAGE has never had a school-based performance where someone does not come forward and disclose abuse."
THE OUTRAGE was nominated for the Innovative Initiative of the Year award by one of their grant funders, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
Since THE OUTRAGE was created in April 2007, five other communities in Kansas have also implemented the play. "SAFEHOME looks forward to it being used and replicated through the country with the goal of increased teen awareness and prevention of this serious problem," said Executive Director Sharon Katz.
