The Jewish Community Center presents H.O.R.S.E. ‘n Around, a basketball tournament on May 17 at The Center at 5801 W. 115th Street. The competition, which is just what it sounds like – a simple game of H.O.R.S.E. – is open to the public, and designed for anyone who can throw a ball. But, with a chance to win $10,000 at the final regional tournament to be held in Kansas City in July, the stakes are much higher than the H.O.R.S.E you might remember as a child.
The Center’s tournament is the first of its kind in the country, and was born out of a game that is now becoming a national phenomenon. The inspiration for the Tournament came from David Kalb, who defeated Lebron James in H.O.R.S.E last year on a Malibu basketball court where scenes from "White Men Can't Jump" were filmed. After doing some research on the Kalb-James match up, Keith Zimmerman, local sports promoter, created The H.O.R.S.E ‘n Around Tournament and will bring the nationals to Kansas City in July.
Sam Lacey, former Kansas City Kings player, will be at The Center from noon to 2 ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)

The sculpture titled “Leaping Hedges” will be located in the lobby of Leawood City Hall for one year. “Leaping Hedges” is the sixth temporary installation of the “Art on Loan Program”, which provides local artists the opportunity to display their work to the residents of Leawood for one year.
Leaping Hedges" represents the organic movement of trees and water interacting with geometric doodles, captured in steel plate. Using a plasma cutter controlled by a computer, Jesse transforms digital photographs and CAD drawings into cut-out steel panels. This piece is a continuous artwork flowing across 8 panels, forming a self supporting folded screen. The linkages that hold each panel together are referencing geometric spider-web structures, creating a flexible, interchangeable system. "Leaping Hedges" is both a drawing and a sculpture that explores light, shadow and the relationship between natural and geometric forms. This eight paneled folding screen style sc ... Four college students will each receive $2,500 in financial aid from SFP in commemoration of the company’s 10-year anniversary.
SFP, a leading developer of fertilizer efficiency products, introduced the scholarships at their April 7th ribbon-cutting ceremony at its new world headquarters in the Park Place mixed-use development.
Executives from the Leawood Chamber of Commerce, business and civic leaders, agricultural association affiliates and business partners attended the event, both to celebrate SFP’s 10 years in business and to inaugurate the new 12,199-square-foot office. Peyton Sellers, the SFP sponsored NASCAR Nationwide Series driver, was on hand to sign autographs for guests.
“We are proud of this corporate milestone,” says Jake Sanders, SFP’s vice president of market development. “The SFP Scholarship Program was created to honor the people who’ve been devoted to SFP since its inception, and it represents our commitment to the future of agriculture.”
SFP, a research and development company, has spent a decade solving some of agriculture’s long-standing fertilizer inefficiency challenges. Its two products – AVAIL®, a phosphorus fertilizer enhancer and NutriSphere-N®, a nitrogen fertilizer manager, help today’s growers maximize the efficiency of the fertilizer they apply. In 2007, SFP’s NutriSphere-N was voted AgProfessional magazine’s “Editors Choice N ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)
