On Sunday, June 4, 2006, SAFEHOME will hold its 14th Annual June Jubilee, “Blueprint for Success,” to benefit the women and children who are clients of Johnson County’s only provider of services for victims of domestic violence.
The “Blueprint for Success” Jubilee includes dinner, live and silent auctions, entertainment, and a short program. This event will mark the kick-off of SAFEHOME’s capital campaign.
SAFEHOME is conducting the first capital campaign in its 26-year history to raise funds to renovate a former hotel. The facility would allow SAFEHOME to increase shelter capacity from 29 to 40 beds, and eventually 60 beds.
Will and Senia Shields are Honorary Chairs of the event. Anne Peterson will be the Mistress of Ceremonies with Chuck Robinson conducting the live auction.

Shawnee Mission Medical Center will offer free stroke screenings to the public on Saturday, May 20, 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m., at the hospital, 9100 W. 74th Street in Merriam. The screening will include taking blood pressure in both arms, as well as a Doppler ultrasound of the carotid arteries to detect plaque or narrowing which could lead to a possible stroke.
Results of the screening will be discussed with each participant immediately after and recommendations will given for further treatment, if necessary. For more information or to register for a stroke screening, call the ASK-A-NURSE Resource Center at 913-676-7777.
A project that used a game-like exercise to teach the public about complex engineering concepts earned doc COMMUNICATIONS a “Best of Show Award,” from the Kansas City chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC). The firm won the award, along with several others, at the chapter’s Bronze Quill Gala held Friday, May 3, 2006, at the Westin Crown Center. The annual event is held to honor the communications work of the area’s top corporations, non-profits and government agencies.
The IABC awarded Michael DeMent and Susan Tolleson the best of show award for their entry “Right Turns: Creating a State/Local Partnership for Long-Range Planning”. doc COMMUNICATIONS developed the transportation planning tool for the Kansas Department of Transportation as part of a study to determine how best to handle long-term growth along K-7, a rapidly developing highway on the west edge of Kansas City.
