In 1992, The Health Partnership Clinic opened to provide care for the low income families and the uninsured living in Johnson County. The clinic now provides free medical and dental care to these residents at two sites: Overland Park and Olathe. Through partnerships with local organizations, volunteer doctors, nurses, and clerical workers have helped the Clinic become an important resource in our community. The clinic has over 100 volunteers and in 2009, they provided 5,451 hours of service for a value of $246,639.

Amanda Lowe is known among her peers as a “Southern burst of energy”. As President/CEO of Health Partnership of Johnson County, Amanda brings 20 years of health care and social service program and administration experience to the clinic. She previously served as chief operating officer of the Bradley Free Clinic in Roanoke Virginia, one of the nation’s largest free health clinics. Since joining Health Partnership Clinic, she has established HPC as a Medical Home for the uninsured residents in our community. Under her leadership the clinic has doubled the number of paid staff and volunteer providers, increased patient visits by more than 110% and relocated its Overland Park facility to allow for further growth and expansion.

Her passion for the underserved extends beyond the local community. She serves as board member, secretary and legislative committee chair for the Kansas Association for the Medically Underserved, the state Primary Care Association. She is married to Richard Lowe, a Vice President with HCA Midwest Health System. Together they have five kids and reside in south Overland Park.

In addition to an insightful program, our newest Chamber members will be presented in our quarterly "Chamber Debut". Each attendee will receive a description from each business that has joined the Leawood Chamber in the past 90 days.

The entire program was outlined and developed in only two weeks, after a wheelchair-bound person was befriended by an employee of Ranchmart Ace Hardware who offered to supplement his garden with plants from her own garden.

It's a great human interest story, but what makes it more appealing is that it is a one of a kind program that will not only bring beauty to the lives of persons in need, it will also bring much needed companionship. The Whole Person, a l ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)

Shawnee Mission Medical Center’s Stroke Program Awarded Certification

Shawnee Mission Medical Center (SMMC) has earned the Gold Seal of Approval™ from The Joint Commission for Primary Stroke Centers. SMMC earned this distinction after the Joint Commission conducted an unannounced on-site review in January. “Shawnee Mission Medical Center demonstrated that its stroke care program follows national standards and guidelines that can significantly improve outcomes for stroke patients,” said Jean E. Range, MS, RN, CPHQ, Executive Director, Disease-Specific Care Certification for the Joint Commission.

Each year, approximately 700,000 people experience a new or recurrent stroke, which is the nation’s third leading cause of death. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 45 seconds and someone dies of a stroke every 3.1 minutes. Stroke is a leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States with approximately 4.7 million stroke survivors alive today.

“We’re proud to achieve this distinction,” said Susan Stark, MSN, RN, ACNS-BC, SMMC Director of Evidence-Based Practice. “Joint Commission Primary Stroke Certification recognizes Shawnee Mission Medical Center’s commitment to providing outstanding stroke care to our patients and our community.” The Joint Commission’s Primary Stroke Center Certification is based on the recommendations for primary stroke centers published by the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association’s statements/guid ...
