Kansas Legislative Update 04-29-2011

Legislative Report for the Leawood Chamber of Commerce
First Week of the 2011 Veto Session of the Kansas Legislature
April 29, 2011, from Bob Vancrum, Consultant

The Kansas Legislature opened their veto session on Wednesday.  There are vast differences to be resolved including the 2012 budget, most tax and economic development bills, important education bills, as well as a possible resolution of the major funding shortfall in KPERS (the state employee retirement system).

The major differences that divide the Senate and House conferees on the budget include the original House passed budget makes deeper cuts in 2012 school finance spending, in order to provide the amounts estimated to be required by the federal government to match special education funding for last year.  The Senate made cuts in many agencies across state government to cover this amount.  The House made deeper cuts in state employee salaries and ultimately ended up with an ending balance some $70 million higher than the Senate.

The Tax Conference Committee has all economic development and tax policy changes for the year.  Both sides have agreed to the Governor’s unlimited expensing of capital items and his creation of new cash closing fund to attract prospects for economic development, and they have agreed with a phase-out of business tax credits.  The differences between them are (1) what to do with existing high perform ... Leawood Officials Confident in City's Future

A recent article in The Johnson County Sun discusses the future of the city of Leawood, and the options that are being considered as remaining tracts fill up.

While some may consider being landlocked a negative thing, Leawood Mayor Peggy Dunn and Leawood Chamber CEO Kevin Jeffries take a positive stance.

The 2011-2012 Leawood Area Community Map Will Include More Chamber Members

The Leawood Chamber develops a Leawood area community map every year, in an effort to provide a valuable marketing tool for Chamber members, as well as a helpful guide for visitors.

In years past, the map has consisted of mostly restaurants (including Leawood Chamber members and non-members), hotels, movie theaters, public art pieces, hospitals, medical facilities, and places of worship.

This year the map will focus only on Leawood Chamber members and more of them. While attempting to provide more value to our member businesses, this year the map will not list any non-Chamber members, and will include several new categories.

The Chamber prints approximately 6,000 community maps and they are distributed in a variety of avenues, including:

If you would like to have some of these maps to display at your place of business, or if you would like to purchase ad space in this map, please contact Jami by emailing jamic@leawoodchamber.org.
