A Taste of Leawood 2006

One of the area`s best events now entering its ninth year! Enjoy a casual evening of culinary splendor from the area`s finest restaurants under the stars in the Leawood City Hall Courtyard.

The jazzy blues sounds of the Dan Doran Band will fill the air as patrons enjoy wines, spirits and tantalizing selections from many area restaurant menus. We expect a crowd of 600 people to enjoy jazz and samplings of the Leawood area`s finest cuisine, beverages and spirits in the Leawood City Hall Courtyard on Saturday, June 17th from 7pm to 11pm.

"Essential Concepts and Practices in Organizational Innovation Management" - Professor Tom Bowlin will discuss business advantages of being an innovative leader, framework for guiding innovation improvement, proven practices and recent trends, and resources for personal review.

The presentation will be 45 minutes in length, followed by a 15 minute Q&A session.

On Sunday, June 4, 2006, SAFEHOME will hold its 14th Annual June Jubilee, "Blueprint for Success," to benefit the women and children who are clients of Johnson County’s only provider of services for victims of domestic violence.

The "Blueprint for Success" Jubilee includes dinner, live and silent auctions, entertainment, and a short program. This event will mark the kick-off of SAFEHOME’s capital campaign.

SAFEHOME is conducting the first capital campaign in its 26-year history to raise funds to renovate a former hotel. The facility would allow SAFEHOME to increase shelter capacity from 29 to 40 beds, and eventually 60 beds.

Will and Senia Shields are Honorary Chairs of the event. Anne Peterson will be the Mistress of Ceremonies with Chuck Robinson conducting the live auction.

Major sponsors include Lee Jeans; Robbie Manufacturing; Bank of Blue Valley; Dr. Mary Adams; Barbara & Patrick Patterson; Pulaski Bank Home Lending; Shawnee Mission Medical Center and Favorite Healthcare Staffing, Inc. Event organizers expect 400 guests will attend.

Prairie Book Club

Each week a costumed turn of the century schoolteacher will read book historical fiction for children. In addition to the reading there will be activities relating to the reading. The book club will meet every Wednesday June through July with the exception of July 5th. June 7th we will be reading "Twister on Tuesday" by Marsha Pope. The following 4 weeks we will read "A Teacher's Funeral; A Comedy in Three Parts". The final 2 weeks we will be reading "Sarah, Plain and Tall".

This series of family concerts will run every Thursday morning in June and July beginning June 8th. Jim Cosgrove, children's favorite performer will kick-off the series. "Mr. Stinky Feet" is the "Jimmy Buffet for kids". His high-energy interactive concerts have made him a national award winning performer. This concert is sponsored by Heartland Bank.

Lemonade Stands for Pediatric Cancer Research

The Alex's Lemonade Stands for Pediatric Cancer Research are being held at all 24 Kansas City area Hy-Vee stores including the Leawood Hy-Vee store on Friday June 9th and Saturday June 10th from 10AM to 6PM daily. The location is 12200 State Line Road. Pediatrician Mark Mozer and his family organize the effort. Dr. Mozer's son Jacob is a pediatric cancer survivor. All Kansas City area Applebee's are doing a co-promotion on Tuesday June 13th as part of their Dining to Donate program. If people bring in a flyer advertising this event (available at Hy-Vee the day of the lemonade stands) or downloaded on KUDL 98.1 FM website (coming soon), Applebee's will donate 10% of whatever is spent on your meal on that date to the KC lemonade stand effort.
