Shared Work Program

An Alternative to Layoffs
A shared work unemployment insurance program is designed to help both employers and employees. It is an alternative for employers faced with a reduction in force. It allows an employer to divide the available work or hours of work among a specified group of affected employees in lieu of a layoff, and it allows the employees to receive a portion of their unemployment insurance benefits while working reduced hours.

The Process
An interested employer may obtain a Shared Work Plan
Application form by going to our website at http://www.dol.ks.gov/ui/html/swpempinfo_BUS.html or by contacting the Kansas Department of Labor at (785) 291-6132. To participate, an employer must have reduced the normal weekly hours of work for an employee in the affected unit by at least 20 percent (but not more than 40 percent), and the plan must apply to at least 10 percent of the employees in the affected unit who meet monetary requirements for regular unemployment compensation. If the plan is approved by the Kansas Department
of Labor, workers who qualify for unemployment benefits can receive both wages and shared work benefits. The shared work benefits are the percentage of regular unemployment benefits matching the reduction described in the employer's plan.

Leawood Chamber Members Named Among CFO of the Year Honorees

Two Leawood Chamber members were recently named among the CFO of the Year Honorees. These members include:

When asked what advice he would have for others, Boren said, "Don't take the easy way - work hard. Make time for the little things. They will make a big difference in your professional career and in your personal life."

Boren is on the board of trustees of the Catholic Charities Foundation of Northeast Kansas, and serves as the treasurer and chairman of the finance committee.

Garies talks about her biggest break in her career by saying, "A.L. Huber took a chance on hiring me because I didn't have any construction experience. The company truly has high values and a great reputation, so it's an honor to work for them. They give back so much to the community."

A luncheon was held on Thursday, June 23rd to celebrate the honorees.

The Leawood Chamber would like to congratulate these two individuals and the companies they represent on all their success, and wish them more prosperity in the future.
