Great Plains Energy completes acquisition of Aquila

Great Plains Energy announced the completion of its acquisition of Aquila, Inc. Aquila’s Missouri electric utility business will operate under the brand name of Great Plains Energy’s subsidiary, KCP&L.

The acquisition of Aquila will create significant savings for both Aquila and KCP&L customers. Families, businesses and communities are all facing the impact of higher oil prices, food prices and raw material costs. Utilities face these same cost pressures. Savings resulting from the integration of KCP&L and Aquila operations are expected to generate approximately $198 million of customer savings by 2013 and $547 million by 2017. These savings will be passed on to customers and will help reduce future rate increases.

One change all customers will notice is the new KCP&L logo (see logo at bottom of page), which was publicly unveiled as part of the beginning of the newly integrated operations of the companies. The design of the logo was created to convey movement and energy, reflecting their innovative and proactive approach to meeting tomorrow’s energy needs.

Judicial Selection Process proposal

In response to concerns about the business impact of the proposed changes to the selection of district court judges in Johnson County, the Leawood Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors unanimously voted to adopt a resolution in opposition to the proposal appearing on the November 4 ballot.  The ballot proposal would change our current merit based district court judge selection process to one where judicial decisions would be exposed to the potential of being influenced by campaign contributions.

A system where judges are elected like legislators requires them to campaign and seek contributions from the same attorneys they hear cases from, creating the very real potential for bias and conflicts of interest.  According to Leawood Chamber Board of Directors Chair, Tom Robinett, "Imagine your company is being sued, and your attorney leans over to you in the court room and says he is really sorry, but he supported the judge's opponent in the last election." Judges would also have to spend time away from hearing cases in our already over-burdened judicial system to make public appearances to campaign and attend fund-raising events.

A change to partisan elections could have a tendency to force judicial c ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)
