Jeanette Metzler Honored

Jeanette Metzler, director of St. Joseph Medical Center’s Well*Life at Work, has been named by the Kansas City Business Journal as part of the Women Who Mean Business class of 2011.

The Women Who Mean Business awards programs honors outstanding professional women in for-profit businesses who have made significant contributions to their business or industry, as well as their community. Metzler created a health and wellness program about ten years ago. She was charged with the challenge of taking a program that operated at a deficit and reached about 5,000 individuals a year to creating a profitable program that reached more participants. Metzler not only met the challenge—she far exceeded goals.

Today, Well*Life at Work provides health and wellness services through employers reaching more than 70,000 people each year and gross revenues from 2005 to 2010 has increased an average of 20 percent each year.

“We are making wellness more convenient by moving it out of the hospital and taking it to where people live, work and play,” says Metzler. “Taking wellness to businesses, talking about it, helps create a culture where wellness is encouraged. Businesses are learning that not only is it good for employees, it’s cost effective as well.”

Ginger Bliss, vice president of Strategic Planning and Business Development at Carondelet Health (which includes St. Joseph Medical Center) says, “Jeanette has utilized h ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)

FOUR HCA MIDWEST HEALTH SYSTEM HOSPITAL BREAST CENTERS APPROVED BY THE NAPBC

HCA Midwest Health System, Kansas City’s largest healthcare network, today announces that four of its hospitals have been granted a three-year/full accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons. Following a rigorous evaluation process, Centerpoint Medical Center, Menorah Medical Center, Overland Park Regional Medical Center and Research Medical Center have received this prestigious designation.

Accreditation by the NAPBC is only given to those centers that have voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of quality breast care and that undergo an in-depth evaluation process and review of their performance.  During the survey process, each of the four HCA Midwest hospitals demonstrated compliance with standards established by the NAPBC for treating women who are diagnosed with the full spectrum of breast disease.  The standards include proficiency in the areas of: center leadership, clinical management, research, community outreach, professional education and quality improvement.

“We are very pleased to receive this accreditation,” says Robert Talley, MD, medical oncologist at Centerpoint Medical Center.  “It reaffirms the commitment that our breast center has for the detection and treatment of breast cancer in individuals within our community.”

SUKUMAR ETHIRAJAN, MD, Joings Midwest Cancer Care at Menorah Medical Center

It was a question that the young medical student didn’t have an answer to in 1977 that helped launch his prolific career in cancer care. “A professor in medical school quizzed me about the Philadelphia chromosome,” recalls Sukumar Ethirajan, MD, medical oncologist/hematologist. “I researched it further, reviewed my notes and became fascinated with the role of genetics in cancer.”

The Philadelphia chromosome is a specific chromosomal abnormality associated with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), and Dr. Ethirajan, now with Midwest Cancer Care at Menorah Medical Center, began his challenging career in the world of oncology. He studied tumor biology, biochemistry, radiology and pathology at renowned institutions including Roswell Park Memorial Institute in Buffalo, NY, Boston University Medical Center and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Years later in Kansas City, following prestigious fellowships at the University of California Los Angeles and the University of Minnesota, the young oncologist came face-to-face with the Philadelphia chromosome on a very personal level.

“My good friend who I played recreational basketball with was diagnosed with CML,” says Dr. Ethirajan. “At that time the only treatment available was a bone marrow transplant, and though he did receive one, his remission was short-lived.”

Soon after his friend’s passing, an oral treatment was introduced to help tr ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)
