African Americans began playing America's favorite pastime in the late 1800s on military teams, college teams, and company teams. Eventually they joined professional teams, but were forced out from these teams by 1900 due to racism and "Jim Crow" laws. In 1920 at a meeting held at the Paseo YMCA in Kansas City, MO., the Negro National League was formed under the guidance of Andrew "Rube" Foster and a few other owners of Midwestern teams.
The Brooklyn Dodgers recruited Jackie Robinson from the Kansas City Monarchs in 1945. Robinson became the first African-American in the modern era to play on a Major League team. Robinson's move to the Major Leagues prompted the decline of the Negro Leagues because more African-American players were recruited for the Major Leagues and fans followed. The last of the Negro League's teams disbanded in the early 1960s, however, the legacy lives on through the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.
The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum was founded in 1990 to preserve the rich history of African-American Baseball. Our guest speakers at this month's membership luncheon will be Greg Baker and Bob Kendrick with the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.
In addition to an insightful program, our newest Chamber members will be presented in our quarterly "Chamber Debut". Each attendee will receive a description from each business that has joined the Leawood Chamber in the past 90 days.

Sheril Herman, co-owner of American Companion Care, recently shared her thoughts on what Leawood Chamber membership has meant to her and her business,
"To me the secret to networking success is developing relationships and finding ways to help other people. I would rather have a strong relationship with someone rather than a handful of business cards. One reason that I enjoy the Leawood Chamber so much is that they seem to mirror that philosophy. Chamber events are a place where true networking is about quality of relationships, not quantity. I see a room full of people who are there to give more than they are there to take. It is a refreshing atmosphere of professionals and I look forward to the events and my next great connection."
Over the three years Sheril has been a member of the Chamber, she's had the opportunity to make many meaningful business connections. It's amazing how a brief conversation at a Chamber event can develop into a business relationship and true friendship. For example, Sheril talked about the business connection she's made with fellow Chamber member, Shawna Davidson, owner of Davidson Promotional Products,
"Shawna and I have a lot in common. She is, like me, a female business owner and entrepreneur. Shawna has been gracious enough to introduce me to her connections within the chamber, as well ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)
