Lobsterfest to Benefit Children's Mercy Hospitals & Clinic

Maine on Main

On Saturday, August 28th, 2010, Give Hope Back is hosting the first-ever Lobsterfest to benefit Children’s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics by flying in fresh Maine lobsters to be served with warm chedda’ biscuits, market-fresh veggies, cold beverages and live music.

Lobsterfest will be located on the green roof-top park on the 6th floor of Cosentino’s Parking Garage in the Power & Light District between 12th and 13th Street (former Jones Store) from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Lobsterfest began as small dinner in the backyard hosted by Chris Jackman, for a few of his close friends. Eventually, the dinner turned into a feast for more than 90 people. Jackman’s dream was to turn this festive evening into a charity dinner to support a children’s organization in Kansas City – and this year his dream came true. Jackman said, “It is important to me to support the community where I grew up, and that is why I chose Children’s Mercy to receive all net proceeds from Lobsterfest.” The funds raised from Lobsterfest will be used for childcare services, emergency clothing needs for patients and their families, as well as to support the further development and growth of Children’s Mercy and its operations.

Socks in September 2010

The concept began in 2006. Shawna Davidson, owner of Davidson Promotional Products, became aware of a common need among our homeless, new socks. While many efforts have been made to contribute needed items to those affected by homelessness, socks are rarely given. That's when Shawna created a service project called "Socks in September".

In the past four years through the generosity of hundreds, Davidson Promotional Products has collected over 20,000 pairs of socks.

Shawna remarked, "During these tough economic times, the need for donations has escalated. The heartfelt thankfulness and joy in the voices of organization representatives has been humbling."

Last year Davidson Promotional Products gave socks collected to the following organizations:

TLC for Children and Families
Cross-lines
Della Lamb
Hope House
Center of Grace Clothing Closet

Just imagine where the donations are now....
A warm pair of socks for a homeless person.
A woman coming into a shelter with nothing and having new socks for her and her children.
A new package of socks for a child at Christmas.

Davidson Promotional Products sincerely thanks all the Leawood Chamber members that have donated to past sock drives and hopes you will partner with them again in 2010. Your donations have made a difference in the lives of so many people here in our community.

Shawnee Mission Medical Center Breast Center Receives Accreditation

Shawnee Mission Medical Center’s (SMMC) Breast Center was granted a three-year, full accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons. SMMC is the only hospital in the Kansas City metropolitan area and the State of Kansas to receive this recognition.

Accreditation by the NAPBC is only given to those centers that have voluntarily committed to providing the highest level of quality breast care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance. During the survey process, the Breast Center demonstrated compliance with standards established by the NAPBC for treating women who are diagnosed with the full spectrum of breast disease. The standards include proficiency in Center leadership, clinical management, research, community outreach, professional education and quality improvement.

The Breast Center has achieved NAPBC accreditation by demonstrating a firm commitment to offer its patients every significant advantage in their battle against breast disease. Receiving care at a NAPBC-accredited center ensures that a patient will have access to:

• Comprehensive care, including a full range of state-of-the-art services
• A multidisciplinary team approach to coordinate the best treatment options
• Information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options
• Quality breast care close to home.
