On Friday, September 26th, the Kansas Speedway will once again host a metro-wide event before the NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Practice Day & Qualifying activities.

Don't miss the door prizes, great food and action on the track throughout the day. Plus, hear from Carl Edwards, driver of the No. 99 Office Depot Ford Fusion in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series!

Jazz Concert Series at Ironwoods Park

Aug. 17, 2008, 6:00pm at Ironwoods Amphitheater / Ironwoods Park, 14701 Mission Road,

The Leawood Arts Council and Town & Country Bank have collaborated to host “Sundays in the Park” Jazz Concert Series each Sunday evening beginning August 17th through 31st. The concerts will be held at the Ironwoods Amphitheater in Ironwoods Park at 14701 Mission Road.

The 2008 series will kick off again this year with one of the area’s premier Jazz vocal groups, the Wild Women of Kansas City. This four-woman group harmonizes classic jazz and blues numbers while joking with each other and the audience. This concert is sure to be fun and sassy. These “wild women” started performing together about 9 years ago but each has a rich performance history. Millie Edwards, Geneva Price, Myra Taylor and Lori Tucker are high-spirited vocalists. Myra Taylor is the matriarch of the group. She recently celebrated her 91st birthday but still sings and jokes like she did when she began performing in the 1930s.
This upbeat, spontaneous concert is sure to thrill listeners with sounds that take them back to the roots of jazz and blues.

Join the Leawood Parks & Recreation Department and Rob Sight Auto Plaza as we celebrate the many amenities of Ironwoods Park!

The “Party in the Park” will take place on Sunday, August 17 from 2:00-6:00 p.m. at Ironwoods Park (147th & Mission).

Activities include scavenger hunts on the trails, activities in the Nature Center, crafts and music at the Historic Oxford School, balloon artists, face painters and magicians in the Lodge, inflatables and concerts at the Amphitheater, free open climbs at the Challenge Course Wall, and tours of the cabins and more!

The Leawood Kiwanis Club will sell hot dogs, chips and drinks from 3:00-6:00 p.m. The Wild Women of Kansas City will wrap up the event with a performance at 6:00 p.m. as part of the annual Jazz Concert Series.

SAFEHOME Attorney Appointed

SAFEHOME is pleased to announce that our Staff Attorney, Katie McClafin, has recently been appointed to serve as the President of the Young Lawyers Section for the Johnson County Bar Association.

For nearly three years, Ms. McClaflin has been assisting victims of domestic violence with civil court proceedings.

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Proposal to Generate Big for Kansas

Kansas Speedway and The Cordish Company (Kansas Entertainment LLC) proposed a 1.5 million square-foot, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, which will include a 300-room luxury hotel; a state-of-the-art casino with 3,000 slot machines and 140 gaming tables; 275,000 square-feet of destination retail, dining and entertainment including a live music venue; first-class resort amenities; and extensive meeting and convention facilities. With a development cost over $700 million, with no public incentives associated with this project, the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino is projected to provide the community with an economic benefit of $4.86 billion over 20 years.

In addition, the proposal provides expansion capabilities and includes a temporary casino to open within eight months. The temporary casino will operate during construction and will include 2,000 slot machines and 75 gaming tables. It is estimated that the temporary casino will generate in excess of $200 million in annual revenue.

As part of their proposal, Kansas Speedway announced International Speedway Corporation (NASDAQ Global Select Market: ISCA; OTC Bulletin Board: ISCB) (“ISC”) will petition NASCAR for a second NASCAR Sprint Cup Series date for the track if Kansas Speedway and The Cordish Company are awarded the casino management contract for Wyandotte County (Kan.).
