Dr. Tom Trigg, Superintendent of the Blue Valley School District, and Dr. Gene Johnson, Superintendent of the Shawnee Mission School District, will join us and provide insight on both district's upcoming school year.
More on Dr. Trigg: The 2011-12 school year marks Dr. Tom Trigg’s eighth year as superintendent of the Blue Valley School District. Dr. Trigg started his career with Blue Valley Schools in 1996 as assistant superintendent of Administrative Services. In 2001, he became deputy superintendent of Administrative Services for Blue Valley and served in that capacity until he was selected as the district's superintendent in 2004.
Dr. Trigg has been recognized on numerous occasions for excellence in education. Most recently, Dr. Trigg was named the 2011 Kansas Superintendent of the Year by the Kansas Association of School Administrators. He was also one of four finalists for the National Superintendent of the Year.
More on Dr. Johnson: Dr. Gene Johnson has served as an administrator in the Shawnee Mission School District for the past 22 years. Dr. Johnson received his B.A. degree in physical education from Yankton College, South Dakota; his M.S. degree in school administration from Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas; and his Ed.D. degree in educational policy and administration from the University of Kansas.Dr. Johnson’s experiences include extensive work in effective instruction, system planning, and staff supervision. He is a certified curriculum management lead auditor through the Curriculum Management Systems, Inc. and has conducted audits in school districts in thirteen states.

Are you associated with a family-owned business? Chances are, about 90 percent of us are, whether we realize it or not. That’s because 85% to 92% of all U.S. businesses are family owned. Family dynamics – often emotional, irrational and unchecked – can dramatically affect the fortunes of those businesses and the people who work for them. But relationship issues often remain behind the family’s doors, unexamined and unmanaged.
Family ties can bind or break your business
Consider the business owner who is advised to get the greatest tax benefit possible by gifting his business equally to his two children. After Dad dies, the kids disagree and quickly run the business into the ground. And how about the founder who tries to turn the business over to a child who lacks experience or maturity? The result is dysfunctional management relationships caused by family ties at the top that transcend normal standards of role definition and competency requirements.
