Opening Fall 2011, the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts will provide our region with bold programming and performances, as well as innovative youth outreach and education programs.

To learn more about the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, please attend the Leawood Chamber of Commerce meeting on September 21, 2010 for an update given by Larry Kembell from the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. He will bring you up to date on construction progress, funding, programming, and will share their exciting plans for the future. We look forward to seeing you there!

The Leawood Arts Council will present “Wings of Love”, a bird show for the entire family, Friday, August 20th in the Oak Room of the Community Center at Leawood City Hall. The show will begin at 7:30 pm.

“Wings of Love” will feature a variety of birds such as owls, toucans and parrots. This interactive and educational performance will highlight the talents of the birds. The audience will enjoy seeing birds that sing, talk, dance, bowl, skate, bicycle, and play basketball. They also will perform magic tricks.

The Leawood Arts Council will host a free Jazz Concert Series each Sunday evening, August 22nd through September 5th. The concerts will be held at the Ironwoods Amphitheater in Ironwoods Park located at 14701 Mission Road. All concerts will begin at 6:00 pm.

The 2010 series will kick off on August 22nd with Heat Index. Heat Index was formed by several serious musicians looking to play jazz funk music with a distinctive sound, while keeping true to the tradition and spirit of The Jazz Crusaders and Grover Washington, Jr. Heat Index has become a jazz favorite around the Kansas City area after many return engagements at festivals like Parkville Jazz and Blues and Jazz in the Woods.

Heat Index is made up of seven veteran professional players who deliver a fresh and distinctive sound derived from the two saxophones that front the group. Heat Index is sure to create a hot night in Ironwoods Park.

Please join the Leawood Arts Council for their 5th annual free Jazz Series Sunday evenings in the Ironwoods Park Amphitheater. 2010 MOCSA Young At Art Party

Kansas City's Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault (MOCSA) is hosting its 6th annual fundraiser, "Young at Art" Cocktail Party and Silent Auction.

The event will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the Webster House. All proceeds benefit MOCSA's Children's Art and Play Therapy, the program that draws on the healing powers of art and play to help children who have been sexually abused externalize and work through difficult feelings.

Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes

SAVE THE DATE - September 25, 2010

Plan to "Step Out" with the American Diabetes Association!

Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes is the American Diabetes Association's largest annual fundraising and education event. Step Out is a one day walk that takes place in over 150 cities across the United States to help raise money to find a cure for the over 24 million Americans living with diabetes, including more than 320,000 in the Kansas City area.

The walk route is approximately 3 miles, with several rest stops along the way. The morning will include a health & wellness fair, activities for children, food, and live entertainment. The event is open to people of all ages and abilities and will be a perfect day for the entire family!
