In May 2009, the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City and the REACH Healthcare Foundation commissioned a survey of area businesses to determine the impact of health care costs on their business. The survey results provide insight into the challenges businesses are experiencing to provide health benefits for their employees. Those surveyed were also asked what they wanted elected officials to know about the impact of health care on their business, the implications of a non-employer based system and what resources they felt the Foundations and Chambers could provide on health care costs.

Steve Roling, President/CEO of the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City, and Brenda Sharpe, President/CEO of the REACH Healthcare Foundation will join us for breakfast to present the results of the survey.

Board Elections for 2010 will also take place at this meeting, so Chamber members, make sure a representative from your company attends and votes.(election notices were sent to the voting representative for all member businesses on 08/17/09)

On Friday, October 2nd, the Kansas Speedway will once again host a metro-wide event before the NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Practice Day & Qualifying activities.

Two-time NASCAR Champion Tony Stewart will be making his first visit to Office Depot Chamber Day as the guest driver. Plus, don't miss the door prizes, great food and action on the track throughout the day.

Menorah Medical Center’s Fourth Annual Block Party Celebrates Good Health, Food and Fun!

Menorah Medical Center (MMC) is gearing up to host one of the biggest Johnson County neighborhood celebrations of the year, its 2009 Neighborhood Block Party on Saturday, September 12 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  This marks the hospital’s fourth annual free family-oriented fun and health event that features free food, fun and healthy activities for the entire family, in addition to a wide variety of useful health and wellness information, screenings, take-home medical testing kits and more.

“This is an opportunity for us to gather our Johnson County neighbors and friends together for an event that’s fun, while also providing important and beneficial health information,” says Steven D. Wilkinson, Menorah Medical Center president and CEO. “There will be great activities for family members of all ages, but our main purpose is to provide our neighbors with the education and information to help them achieve and maintain healthy lifestyles.”

DOE Announces $37 Million for Small Business Research and Technology

U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced today that $37 million in funding from the Recovery Act will be made available to qualified small businesses through the Department’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs.  Today’s funding announcement emphasizes the Department’s commitment to developing near-term, clean energy technologies while allowing small businesses take part in the new industrial revolution that the sustainable energy economy will bring.

“Small businesses are engines of job creation and innovation, and we need their ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit to drive a clean energy economy,” said Secretary Chu. “By helping small businesses bring clean technologies to market, we can create jobs, reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and reduce carbon pollution.”

DOE’s SBIR/STTR programs target U.S. companies with fewer than 500 employees. Small businesses with strong research capabilities in science or engineering are encouraged to apply. Applications are currently being accepted for topic areas related to improving energy efficiency including:

* Advanced building air conditioning and refrigeration, thermal load shifting, and cool roofs
* Water usage in electric power generation and industrial processes
* Power plant cooling
* Advanced gas turbines and materials
