Last year over 1,000 people from 20 area Chambers participated in the Office Depot Chamber Day at the Kansas Speedway!

On Friday, September 28th, the Kansas Speedway will once again host a metro-wide event before the NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Qualifying & Practice Day activities.

The Chamber Day Package includes:

10:00 am Office Depot Chamber Day and Networking Begins in the VIP Pavilion (Outside Gate C)

Sun Publications is a firm that provides community news to over 225,000 suburban Kansas City homes each week via 15 newspapers and the kccommunitynews.com website. Kraig will be talking about his experience in the newspaper industry and the vision he has for Sun Publications.

Entry forms are now available for the 17th Annual Labor Day 5K Run, presented by the Leawood Parks and Recreation Department, The Headache & Pain Center, PA, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Coca-Cola. Whether you’re a walker, beginning runner, a veteran runner, or a wheelchair athlete, this event is for you!

Join us for a morning run on Monday, September 3 at Leawood City Park, 10601 Lee Blvd. The race starts at 7:30 a.m. for the wheelchair division and 7:35 a.m. for all other participants. The closed course will begin and end at Leawood City Park adjacent to the tennis courts. The first 550 participants will receive an event t-shirt, post event snacks, a water bottle and a ticket to the pancake breakfast, held immediately following the event.

Johnson County Library to host series of Local Government Made Easy Programs

The Johnson County Library will host a series of programs this fall developed by the League of Women Voters entitled Local Government Made Easy at the Central Resource Library, 9875 W. 87th St., Overland Park, KS.  The sessions will run from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm and will provide information on how local government works and how to become an engaged citizen.  Each session will cover a separate topic and be led by a teacher experienced in local government.

Kansas Speedway to Host “Spirit of the Heartland 100”

Kansas Speedway will hold its first annual “Spirit of the Heartland 100” blood and bone marrow drive on September 11, in conjunction with the Community Blood Center and the National Marrow Donor Program.

From 7 AM – 7 PM in the Kansas Speedway media center (400 Speedway Blvd. KC, KS 66111), donors will be able to donate blood and sign up to be potential bone marrow donors. Donors can sign up for a time by logging onto www.esavealifenow.org and using the sponsor code kansasspeedway. Walk up donors are welcome and will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis.

After crossing the start/finish line (checking in and receiving their credential), donors will then proceed to their first pit stop – filling out a brief history and donating blood; pit stop #2 is either breakfast pastries or lunch. For stop #3, donors will have the opportunity to take pace laps around Kansas Speedway. The final pit stop of the day will be receiving a “Spirit of the Heartland 100” t-shirt (while supplies last) and goody bag from Kansas Speedway sponsors and the NASCAR Foundation.

B2B Cookie Winner

This month's B2B cookie winner is Troy Burgess from First National Bank of Olathe.  By attending the Leawood Chamber's July 10th Morning Mingling event and submitting his business card, Troy was automatically entered into a drawing for a dozen Blue Chip Cookies, compliments of Blue Chip Cookies in Town Center Plaza.

Writing the Right Workplace Policies

Employee handbooks can also communicate the core values of an employer.

A handbook is the starting point for communicating a clear mission statement to your employees, and then making sure that it is more than just lip service. If your company has a mission statement voicing certain principles that are important to you, then, make sure your policies reflect those values.

Most policies in a handbook are what we call “guidance” policies.  Guidance policies are those that let the employees know where the boundaries are on behavior. They also provide guidance on day-to-day operations. Guidance policies can be as broad as outlining what sort of behaviors will not be tolerated by the company. They can also be as narrow as defining what amount of cell-phone use or computer use will be tolerated by the company. 

However, care must be taken when writing guidance policies. Frequently, not much thought is given to how they're written. In many cases, poorly written policies have been interpreted to be contracts with employees.
