As the ups and downs of the U.S. economy continue, it is hard to know what we can expect for the future of our country. Our guest speaker at this month's meeting, George Kahn, Vice President and Economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, will be giving us an economic update.

At the Federal Reserve Bank, Kahn serves as an advisor to the Bank's president and board of directors on monetary policy issues and conducts basic and applied research on issues of relevance to the Federal Reserve System. He joined the Bank as an economist in 1982.

Mr. Kahn received a B.A. degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Ph.D. degree in economics from Northwestern University. He taught economics at the University of British Columbia and has published articles on inflation and unemployment, potential economic growth and monetary policy.

In addition to an insightful program, our newest Chamber members will be presented in our quarterly "Chamber Debut". Attendees will receive a description from each business that has joined the Leawood Chamber in the past 90 days.

The docents of the Historic Oxford Schoolhouse will host a program on Friday, August 13th prior to the showing of the movie “The Goonies”. This event will take place in connection with the Movie Night, presented by Leawood Parks and Recreation, at the Ironwoods Park Amphitheater, 147th & Mission Road in Leawood, Kansas.

Learn about the history and superstitions associated with Friday the 13th. Bring your blankets, lawn chairs, family and friends and enjoy a Movie Night with Leawood Parks & Recreation! Come and enjoy a FREE outdoor movie at Ironwoods Park (147th & Mission Rd.) on Friday, August 13. They will be showing “The Goonies” on the BIG SCREEN at the Ironwoods Park Amphitheater.

The movie will begin at approximately 8:30 p.m. Popcorn, ice cream and refreshments will be sold on-site. No coolers or alcoholic beverages can be brought into this family event. St. Joseph Medical Center Pro Am Golf Classic

On Monday, August 30th, the St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation will be teeing off for the St. Joseph Pro-Am Golf Classic at Blue Hills Country Club. Shotgun starts at 7:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. 

A dinner and auction will follow the golf tournament on Tuesday, August 31st at St. Joseph Medical Center, 1000 Carondelet Drive, Kansas City, MO 64114 (Alex George Auditorium). You'll enjoy dinner and a live auction with the Nigro Brothers. Proceeds will raise funds to purchase a surgical microscope for neurosurgery procedures.

Hoefer Wysocki Architects is on the move

After 14 years of steady growth, Hoefer Wysocki Architects  (HWA) is moving their headquarters from the Country Club Plaza to Leawood, Kan. bringing 65 jobs and $5.1 million in initial capital investment to Kansas – with up to 60 additional jobs projected over the next several years. In an industry where staff reductions of 30 percent or more have become the standard, HWA is bucking the trend.

The company will move into the top floor of Pinnacle III, an existing 108,000 square-foot building of their design, located in the Pinnacle Corporate Centre campus, developed by Block Real Estate Services. HWA expects to begin moving to the new location at 11460 Tomahawk Creek Parkway in September.

The relocation was facilitated by the Kansas Department of Commerce, with additional logistical assistance from the Leawood Chamber of Commerce.

“We’re excited to welcome Hoefer Wysocki Architects to Kansas,” said Kansas Department of Commerce Secretary Bill Thornton. “HWA is the latest company to see the advantages of locating in Kansas, and we thank them for their commitment to our state and our workforce.”

HWA is eligible for over $4 million in state incentives, including tax exemptions and workforce training funds.

Midwest Cancer Care at Menorah Medical Center

When it comes to excellence in cancer care, Midwest Cancer Care at Menorah Medical Center is considered among the best in the country.  Recently recognized with a prestigious 2009 Outstanding Achievement Award from the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer (CoC), Midwest Cancer Care at Menorah, part of HCA Midwest Health System, is in an elite group of 82 accredited cancer programs across the United States. 

Established in 2004, the CoC Outstanding Achievement Award is designed to recognize cancer programs that strive for excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients.  The award is granted to facilities that demonstrate a Commendation level of compliance with six standards that represent five areas of cancer program activity, including cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, research, and community outreach and quality improvement. In addition, facilities must receive a compliance rating for the remaining 30 cancer program standards.
 
The level of compliance with the standards is determined during an on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor. Midwest Cancer Care at Menorah Medical Center was last surveyed in 2009 and received a Three-Year Accreditation with Commendation, again exceeding six CoC standards, in addition to the overall compliance rating.
