Temporary Location Selected for Leawood Pioneer Library

The Johnson County Library will close the current Leawood Pioneer Neighborhood Library, at 4700 Town Center Drive in Leawood, this fall for a major renovation project.  While the facility is closed, library services will be offered to the community in a temporary location, 11832 Roe Blvd. (formerly the Sharper Image Store) on the east side of nearby Town Center Plaza.

The temporary location will open in early October 2008 and offer popular adult and youth materials, some computers and seating space. It will be open six days a week. Patrons will be able to pick up and drop off library materials at the location.  However, no donations of books or AV materials to the library will be accepted at the temporary location. Youth and adult programming will be moved to other Johnson County Library locations.

The Leawood Pioneer renovation project will nearly double the size of the 11,000-square-foot library. Plans include a complete interior redesign, roof repairs, and a new addition which will be constructed with "green" building materials.  The expansion, which will match the existing building, will be added on the east side of the library.  The overall expansion will provide space for a community meeting room, youth programming room, study rooms, teen area, more books and audiovisual materials and additional computers. The facility will be closed for approximately a year until completion of the project in the fa ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)

Board Supports both County & City Tax Proposals, Opposes Change in Judicial Selection Process

The Leawood Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has announced its position on three upcoming issues presented to voters on August 5th and November 4th:

Sales Tax proposals

Given Johnson County's need to invest in public safety, the Leawood Chamber Board of Directors endorses the proposed extension of a 1/4-cent Johnson County sales tax for the dedicated purpose of supporting public safety initiatives. This proposal will appear on the August 5, 2008 ballot.

According to Johnson County officials, proceeds from the sales tax will go to fund capital and ongoing operational costs related to public safety, including expansion and operation of the Johnson County Adult Detention Center; construction and operation of a new Juvenile Services Complex, which addresses juvenile intake, assessment, and detention; and construction and operation of a new Johnson County Crime Lab.  Johnson County's portion of the sales tax would raise an estimated $19.6 million annually.  Capital and operational costs not covered by sales tax proceeds will be paid from existing revenue sources.

In addition, the Leawood Chamber Board of Directors also supports the approval of the City of Leawood's tax proposal that will appear on the August 5th ballot. If approved, the City of Leawood will be re-authorized to levy a one-eighth of one percent (.125%) City Retailers' Sales Tax, in addition to the one and four-tenths percent (1.4% ...
